Time For New Additions To The Tank

Hi all.

So far so good. Had 4 Zebra Danios in a my tank for a couple of weeks now (with mature nedia from a friend). Amonia, Nitrite levels are showing zeros and I'm guessing it's safe to add a few more to the tank at the weekend. My main question is, how many fish can I safely add in this addition?

• I was thinking another 4 fish but if I was to add Neons, they are so small I'm thinking that could add 6 of them perhaps?
• Or how about 2 dwarf gouramis and a 4 ghost shrimp

I plan on having 6 Zebras when the tank has it's full compliment but I would it be a good idea to add 2 more Zebras right now or can they wait till later so that the tank will be a little more interesting with different types of fish?

How big is the tank?

Neons like a very mature tank so it may be better to add them at a later date,
Also Ghost Shrimp add very little to your bioload so you don't really need to count them, which means that you could quite safely add 2 Dwarf Gouramis and 2 Zebra Danios as well as the Shrimp.
Although be careful when choosing your Dwarf Gouramis, atm most seem to be quite fragile fish that seem to easily become ill.

Current tank is 24"x12"x12" - 60l I think

I've read elsewhere that the Dwarf Gourmis seem to be prone to disease which is a tad frightening. If they were to become ill, would the other fish 'catch it' too?

most likely but it depends on the illness,

Honey Gouramis would be a much better alternative IMO,
The Red Robin variety are very colourfull

the 1st fish i put in my tank was TEN NEONS and that was after 5 weeks , they have all survived a further 4 weeks , neons will be fine as long as your water is mature and stable, even the fish shop that supplied my tank suggested neons as a starter fish, i dont think they do need a *very* mature tank actually, try some neons

in my opinion of course, the *choice* is yours

I would add the Zebras this weekend - you'll notice that they get more confident and fun to observe. Maybe get two Gourami too, it should be okay.

I agree with adding Neons at a later date when the tank has matured a bit. Although some people are lucky when adding Neons to a new tank, their are many who have few survive.
I'd up the Danios to 6+ as they prefer to be in a group.
What type of fish interest you? Is it colour you want or something small?

I quite like the idea of lots of small fish rather than a few big show fish. The gouramis were not on my original list as they are a tad big but they look so good.

I guess at the moment I'm looking for more colour in the tank.

Platies are great starter fish and there are so many colours available.
