How did you not realize it was urine just by the color even before putting the drops in?!

My sentiments exactly! Did you not notice a slight lemony hue to the said sample or even a bit if a pee whiff???

What on earth did they hope to achieve by knowing if there was ammonia in their peepee? I can't see any point to that at all!

Oh and by the way...YUCK!

If your body is well hydrated, then your urine should be clear, and the uric acid is well diluted.

Now of course...she didn't actually say in her post it was urine. She only hinted at it. The rest is our fertile imaginations.

Even a well hydrated body still has a hint of yellow, it wouldn't be completely clear. Debatable, but if your body is producing completely clear urine then your kidneys are filtering out too much water and the osmolarity of your blood is way off in some way.

Tank water can also have a tint of yellow to it, if you have tannins in your tank. :p

I can only see the tannins if I look through the tank water and there's a white wall behind it. :p

Hmm, thats well and truly weird!

If you see these people again. Talk about AWKWARD!

Then perhaps to lighten the moment, you might wanna take the p**s out of them.........oh......um.........

Then you don't have enough wood in the tank.  I've got a 10 gallon QT that I'm using to temporarily house some fish from school, and put all the wood in there with them...  The tannins are quite visible.

Sorry.. back from work now.. LOL!!

You weren't wrong... bless the customer but.... seriously... *shudder*

He was a old guy and had caught the bus into town and apparently had trouble...going.... on command.... hence sample as he was on way (but early) to doctors...

We had been discussing tank before I was asked to test water (was about to test for phosphates using different kit and nitrates too...) and his fish were fine but had a bad diatom algae bloom so I wasn't shocked to see the green tinge to the water and no offense... I don't make a habit of sniffing people's samples of tank water!!

Poor guy was beyond horrified and didn't know what to do! He couldn't talk to me so I just kind of quietly put lid back on and put it in a fish bag and handed it back to him and then went and scrubbed my hands with everything shy of bleach until I stopped feeling sick!

Not seen him again though!! ;)

Poor guy has probably died of embarrassment since then.

Not to mention that he needs to get another sample... unless he wants the doctor to test the tank water for him.

That is probably true, although the tannins were a lot more visible about 8 months ago when I first got the wood. I've been wanting to put more wood in but my LFS charges an arm and a leg for a piece. :(

I work in one of the few professions where people bring us these samples and it's perfectly normal.

What annoys us is when they simply post them through the letter box without telling us why they sent them in. Most companies would call the police if people starting putting things like that through the letter box. We just sigh and ask for more details.

Oh, and yes, it can be quite crystal clear at times.
