Thinking Discus

well i raised the temp to 82 and if any thing the gourami is more active
i dont have hot water tap, just hot soft water and cold tap,
so i have to boil the tap.
looks like im going to windy city discus soon to pick up a few
he said $10 per inch, so about 40 dollars per fish.
plants are growing very well, so i hope the discus enjoy them.
what filtration do you have for your tanks? (discus keeper 403, and anyone else for that matter!
also do you think you could but up some picks of your tanks?

Good choice, you won't regret Windy City. My 90g has sponge filter and Fluval 405. My 40 breeder has a power head with some filter wool attached, and a Aquaclear 50. All my tanks are Bare bottom. Got two sick fish at the moment, QT'd and medicating :( Will get some pictures once they are better (fingers crossed I never have luck worming sick Discus :( )
well, sorry to hear about the sick fish

actually , i was wondering if maybe i could get a picture of your sick tank setup
because i really need to set up a hospital tank.

yeah, i thinnk im going to get a sponge on my powerhead for extra filtration, unless you say that its not needed

I'll snap a picture tonight after I finish all my w/c's. Sure, a sponge definitley isn't going to hurt.

alright sponge filter it is
pics pretty pease? :fun:

Hey sorry about not uploading last night, took a little longer then expected to clean the tanks. Here is a photo of my QT tank. Very basic, no gravel and a power head w/sponge attachment.

i see
well, sorry about your fish
how big should a hospital tank be for discus?
well, my ph and hardness are going back up
since i do so frequent water changes
will my original hardness be okay for discus?
also could i see some picks of your main tanks?
(i hope i dont sound like im nagging!!)

People seem to have blown up water chemistry with Discus a little bit. Honestly, if you can drink the water, it should be fine ;) If you hardness is fluctuating a lot in short periods of time though, this may cause problems.

Sure I'll snap you a few pictures tomorrow. They look very identical to the QT tank though. That tank is a 29G I think it to be a pretty good size as a discus hospital tank.

alright, so im done with peat.
thanks for the replies and im looking forward to pics!!

ok, so i have another question
is sand substrate better than the big pea gravel i have currently?
i thought it was because poop can be vaccumed off easier
is this true?
before i get discus im moving the tank into our basement,
which has a more cosistent temp than
my bedroom.

i love that discus in the first tank
the bigger one
its the type i hope to get when i get my discus

wow those fish are beautiful!!

so do you know if sand substrate is better
in a planted tank for discus?
i have red that in a couple sites on the web
but i wanted to know for sure.

Debris can get caught in the gravel where as debris will normally collect on top of the sand. It will make things easier to clean.

I use sand and love it means I can overfeed with my discus in my planted tank but also I have 10x turnover! So filtration isn't a issue at all, well 8x a 55gal with a xp 4 and a koralia 1, I think the main thing with planted is over filtration and with sand I find that its much easier to clean after a huge feeding. I have changed over from gravel in all my planted tanks to sand

thanks a ton theshadowinc-im re-setting the tank up in the basement tomarrow-i will post pics after its done-i am using sand-i cant wait to get discus!!
