...Brown widows :crazy:
I'm in the process of moving to a different apartment (my lease ended and the rent would double on a renewal) and I keep finding them everywhere... I almost grabbed this one last night while cleaning out everything from under my kitchen sink. They're so pretty, but it makes me paranoid seeing them everywhere. Current number of brown widow sightings: 5.

Things like this remind me why I still live in the UK :)

Are they poisonious like the Black Widows?

Actually, they are. They are one of the most poisonous spiders in the U.S., as their venom is about 2x as potent as Black Widows. :crazy:
If I were you, I'd call an exterminator!!

No it's not... I think you are thinking brown recluse -- this is a brown widow. It is a relative of the black widow, but its bite is not as bad and widows are not prone to biting anyway. :)

EDIT to add, it is not entirely accurate to say that brown recluse venom is 2x as potent as black widow venom anyway, as they work in different ways and really aren't comparable on that level. Brown recluse venom is cytotoxic and hemolytic, whereas widow venom is neurotoxic.

yep spiders exist in the uk the point was there is a new kind of spider found and the OP is in the usa

on another point - its the middle of summer but i wont hang my washing outside as my line and pegs have been turned into a spider house!

xXx

but do spiders Not exist in the UK?
yes but all native species are harmless.
there are few few introductions that can cause severe pain
if they bite us, like the false widow I mentioned earlier;
none, so far, have any life threatening bites to humans.

I live in one of the few states that has native brown recluses. I live next to a creek and everytime it rains the spiders somehow get in. Dont want to use pesticides because of my tanks so I just kill them. Apparently, they are only a huge threat to small children and the elderly, I should be fine if I got help quickly. Just thought I would throw that in.

ah that may well be but we do have the false widow now making a home here in the UKhttp://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/life/in...da-nobilis.html
great news for a big wimp like me that lives on the south coast, wont be going out between june and november ever again. :lol: :no:

If you have a large bed with a head peace against the wall. Check behind there, spiders like to make nests right there and before you know it you can wake up with a thousand spiders on your sheets. A family friend (Olld) died from a couple dozens brown recluse bites.
