The Friendliest Fish Forum Around?

Indeed, whats the point in trying not to possibly hurt someones feelings when, after all, it revolves around the lives of living creatures?

Yeah they could search it out but what is the fun in that? If I wanted to search for the answer toa fish question I'd go out and rent a book, part of the fun of an online forum is communicating with real people!
And where's the fun in answering the same question time and again, hence the posts get let, and hence we get another one of these threads about people's threads not being answered in the way someone wants. the only reason I joined this forum was to be able to search through older threads.

Then read older threads and stop whining about things you don't like to read! YOU don't wish to be wrapped in cotton-wool do you?

A scientific fact would be that figure 8 puffers are not brackish water fish but I don't think that even our most "scientifically qualified" members would agree to that being posted on the fact list because someone might actually house one in freshwater. That would be cause for major flaming if it were to be admitted to!

why do all of my topics turn into cockroaches that never die -_-

Honestly, this was just ment to make a point. Not to say newbs VS oldies, ect. It was to make a point that we all have a little tension in all directions, and we should take an understanding breather. I think this is making some progress, but it's not exactly in the direction I invisioned it in.

Actually, that's against general forum etiquette in general and you do yourself no favours admitting that you flaunt that. The search button is there for a reason. Why should you expect someone to spend time and effort helping you when you can't be bothered to spend some time and effort yourself?

I don't need help I just enjoy the aquaria related conversation on here. But even then I have enjoyed it less and less because of the tendency to incite rage when I mention a practice that someone else dissagrees with.

And don't worry, I don't seek to do myself any favors by flaunting the fact that I don't like the search button, I know I have no name or respect on the forum and that's fine with me. Like I said earlier I don't take any of this too seriously; being insulted by someone else I've never even met doesn't hurt my feelings at all. Besides this forum for me is purely for entertainment value.

How rude

But why make the mistake in the first place? People are too lazy too research information, get into a mess with their tank, and come on here asking questions. Why didnt you come here before buying the fish? Its technically your fault for acting stupidly.

Its like, buying a mobile phone without knowing anything about it, or like driving a car without knowing how.

Anyway, if you did research it and were mis-told somthing, then its fine i guess (unless you believed what a fish shop said [like any other business, they will lie to take your money])

Sorry for sounding harsh.

in no particular order...

(1) unfortunately, this was a topic bound to turn into oldies vs newbies, because most oldies obviously don't feel this is a problem and most of the newbies caring enough to read the topic will be agreeing with it  (hrm, is that how one spells "agreeing"?)

(2) most of us objecting to multiple repeats don't read these topics and generally ignore them. but (real scenario here) if there are 5 active topics called "tell me about dwarf puffers" and a pinned sticky called "all about dwarf puffers"--i personally get irritated at repeat #6. its just frustrating to see a person be that oblivious to the contents of their screen.

(3) some people asking silly questions get blasted because they just picked the wrong time. a few months back there was some drama with a rather unintelligent 12 yr old just not understanding the simplest of answers and rejecting all negative information. tempers ran high, the kid posted over 100 times in just a few hours, and people just blew up in general. unfortunately for a few brand-newbies, their initial posts didn't recieve the care and concern that they otherwise merited--simply because people were already in a bad mood when they read them.

(4) i personally try hard to cut people slack, especially with regards to etiquette, when they have a single digit post count or have only been a member for a few weeks. there's just no way for these people to really understand the vibe around here. i like to think that most of the oldies feel similarly.

(5) finally, i would like to strongly disagree with the statement that people with high post counts have no external life. i know that a lot of us are considered very active in our respective fields and that the vast majority of people on here have other hobbies, families, significant others, and other trappings of a "life". what i don't have in real life is anybody that cares or understands about fishkeeping. so the forum is a really fun place for me, somewhere that people don't think that i'm strange for having spent well over $2k on fish and fishkeeping supplies!

Andy is right, in most forums if you asked a common question the first five replies would be "SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH!"

Plenty of people have answered the same questions a lot of people post, and have done it in a friendly manner, they just don't feel like doing it again. And as far as not needing help, but just enjoying the conversation, if you bring up interesting topics, I'll bet you anything that the majority of the posts will be thoughtful and intelligent, and that the posts with all the "rage" will be quite rare.

One other thing while I'm at it, one of my pet peeves I guess... We all know Walmart is bad, we all know people give bad advice. There should be a pinned topic of all the merged "OMG THIS IS SO CRUEL!" posts, so people can just vent in that thread.

Yeah well this forum can get a bit too dramatic in my opinion. Its a Forum peoples not Laguna Beach! I'm not sure if this forum is TOO friendly (you can never be TOO friendly IMO) But yeah its true that people dont listen to the advice and insist on doing things wrong  .

P.S:Laguna Beach is a MTV based reality show that has too much drama.

I don't read those posts that do not appear interesting, no problem for me. I have little need for cotton wool, but I do feel that the more experienced members are drifting away from the forum as the constant repeats of posts seen thousands of times holds no information for them. I used to spend well over an hour going through the forum reading posts. I am lucky if I find enough interest for 20 minutes now. How to solve this is a difficult one as it is the influx of new members that causes this repetitive nature.

I do prefer the forum to have an edge and for people to be mature enough to have someone disagree strongly with them and not go crying off saying "I thought this was friendly", but many don't, so I do succumb to the forum's kinder nature.

That fact of yours would depend on how it is put. It is often stated by our experts on here that Fig 8s are found in freshwater in the wild but they seem to do better in captivity in light brackish. That is not at all contentious, and I for one would be more than happy to see it there.

Seriously people, try a political forum and then come back here and try and say it isn't friendly enough.

compared to some other forum's I've been on this is pretty friendly.

yeah there is some flaming goes on, but honestly, it's quite often an animals life at stake, so I do think that it's important to get the message across, sometimes you just have to be harsh with people to make them understand.

as for the repetition on posts, i think it's good, if I've asked a question, someone's replied and 3 people have said they agree, then I know there's a pretty good chance it's good advice. Obviously you have to draw the line somewhere but I think the vast majority of the time it's not a problem and is helpful.

When pinned topics are not read, questions are asked for the 1000th time, search function not used, good advice from multiple sources is ignored, multiple threads on the same topic, basic forum rules are ignored and brokern, not to mention posts that are written in such poor English that they are barely comprehensible, etc, etc...... A public flogging is in order. It's got nothing to do with knowledge of fishkeeping, it's plain old common sense and nettiquette. Sometimes this place is just a bit tooo friendly.

C'mon now, be honest, how many of you wanted to say that!
