Are we syndicating material from this web site to others? Or are other sites simply stealing stuff? I don't mind donating stuff when asked, and have done more than once, but I'm not wild about stuff being passed onto other sites without my permission. Can anyone clarify the situation here?

Thanks!

Neale

People are stealing it. We've had many issues with other sites and forums stealing our material. If you can find contact information, we can contact them about this.

Will bring this up with William. This is theft of intellectual property. SH

the profile area should be private to members only so guests cant post in it

That's if its the guests taking members articles, which is not right.
But good idea it should be private to members only.

plagiarism is just about impossible to stop. All you can do is contact the forum/site owner, explain the problem and hope that they will listen and act accordingly. If they don't, then you can always approach their hosting company, give them your proof. If the host is reputable, they will warn the site owner to act according to your wishes (adding a credit line, link back to original..whatever it is you've requested) If after a set period of time they don't respond, the host will normally shut the site down...It's worth a shot

OK, a little time on Google (who own Blogger.com) yielded this:

http://www.google.com/blogger_dmca.html

So it's a question of whether we can be bothered. It also remains to be clarified whether material posted at TFF is public domain or copyright the authors and/or TFF.

Cheers, Neale

PS. It gets better: Google claims no ownership or control over any Content submitted, posted or displayed by you on or through Google services ... By submitting, posting or displaying Content on or through Google services which are intended to be available to the members of the public, you grant Google a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to reproduce, publish and distribute such Content on Google services for the purpose of displaying and distributing Google services. In other words, once it's on Blogger.com, Google consider themselves free to use such content as much as they want! It's a charter for intellectual property theft, by basically saying they don't police the copyright laws, but assume the Blogger account holder to do so, but once it's there, they'll use it, blaming the account holder if something goes wrong.

PPS. Also read the links below. It is pretty obvious that this person is stealing content to sell advertising space, in other words people who do searches on tropical fish go to those web pages where they may click on advertisements. There's no sign at all that the personb blogging there (spam blogging in fact) has any interest in fish. It's one thing "accidentally" copying stuff across to a homepage you're making about a hobby, it's another thing entirely stealing others' work to make a profit.

But what stops someone joining up and then stealing the info?
how would they know the information is there until they join,
Who says they join solely to splog? And spammers join pretty much every site anyway, so they will be more than happy to do so.

Depriving many good people who browse for the info just to stop the occasional splogger would appear a sledgehammer and nut scenario to me.

I have seen other sites use a copyright system where if you try to copy and paste it stops you and says that material is protected by copyright, of course this doesnt stop someone who is willing to type out the information manually but would put off some. Prehaps some kind of add on or hack is available for the invision software?

I hate the way hosting websites, make the process so bureaucratic that if you wish to file a complaint you have to put a lot of time and energy into the process. If someone is willing to take this up with blogger, please contact me and I will give you my authority as site owner. It is my understanding that items posted on this site are the copyright of both the original author and also fishforums.net.

But what stops someone joining up and then stealing the info?

Copyright laws. http://www.fplc.edu/tfield/copynet.htm http://www.copyright.gov/

Once it is fixed, written down or saved on a hard drive, it can be copyrighted. You send in the form with $45 and a copy of your document, and it is covered by federal copyright laws. If it's used without permission whoever stole it can be served with a subpoena to appear in federal court.

I just printed out another copyright form, some of my posts on here may be registered, some may not. Steal away, you may meet a stranger who hands you an envelope. Good luck in federal court.

I just know I'm a gunna get flamed for this, but....

Honest Question: Who actually 'owns' the information freely posted on this forum?

IMHO, if someone copied & pasted information I originated then so beit. I'd find it kind of flattering, regarless of whether they creditied me or not (to pass it off as thier own, however, would peeve me a bit).

The only draw back of this kind of plagarisim, from an open forum, is that there would be no control of the information by the original author - this is how mistakes & myth spread like wildfire.

Regards,

Andy
