hi i am new to the forum and i would like to know if a a tetratec ex700 be alright for my 3 foot aquarium

36 inch long 12 inch wide 15 inch deep

your tank is 106 litres and a ex1200 can do up to a 120 litre tank so it should be ok,

good choice on the tetratec aswell, they are reliable filters!

so what should i go for the ex700 or the ex1200
thanks for your help

I'd go with the EX1200. It's on the boundarys of what the EX700 will do according to the manufacturer, and manufacturer ratings are always a tad, shall we say, optimistic?

I agree with Adam here, tetratec are great little filters, that have good reliability and customer services. Only been on the market three years now, so long-term reliability is impossible to judge, but if reliability long-term is a good as short-term and build quality, they should all still be going in 15 years time :good:

All the best

i am going to let the tank rest for at least two weeks before adding any fish when i do get round to adding fish it will be in small numbers so the filter can get used to the increased waste product
i have not kept fish for a while but when i did i had four plattys which rapidly multiplied in to a tank full

thanks for all your help if i need any more help i will ask here

According to the manufacturers rating the actual rating for the ex700 is 100-250 litres so i think it would be more than enough for your size tank! i run the ex700 in my juwel vision 180 and it is perfect!
Fish like a steady current not a jacuzzi!!! :good:

As stated above, flow is adjustable, but sorry if I got the ratings wrong

Take a look at fishless cycling. The metod of cycling you have planned puts a great risk on the health of your fish, and even when done carefuly at best damages the long-term health of your fish. Many see the process you plan as un-ethical, and things in this hobby move quickly. Leaving the tank to stand does nothing to make it ready for fish once it's up to temperature :good:

Please fishless cycle, as it is better for the fish :good:

I agree with rabbut! you must cycle your tank properly with mature media! i currently have my old internal running in conjuction with my ex700 until the external comes up to speed! i havent lost any fish by doing this so i would highly recommend this!! :good:
