I just nocticed one of my tetra has a small tear in it its tail fin. :-( The fish seems to be acting fine and my water is in excellent condition.

My question is do I need to be concerned that this might be a fin rot situation? Should I quarantine this fish or would that stress it out too much? Should I treat the tank just in case this is fin rot or shoudl I wait and see if I see any other fish develop problems?

I did a 50% water change today just to be safe but my water was in excellent condtion before that. I clean and test my tank daily to every other day.

My other fish seem fine. I do have a male guppy with a torn fin but it is on the mend and I am positive that happened when another male nipped at his fin. He is also acting just fine, eating and very active.

Thank you so much for any advice. It is very much appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it personally, as most fish may have the occasional fin damage. If it starts turning grey and having a shaggy appearance, you may want to quarantine and treat. But with clean water it should heal on its own.

You could also quarantine and treat with Melafix, as that can speed the healing process.

Thanx so much for the replies. Should I up the amount of water I clean daily? I usually do 4-8 gallons every day or every other day. Should I do more like 12-16 gallons daily for the next few days? its a 55 gallon tank.

Thank you again for the replies!

It defineately couldn't hurt.

Ok,Thanx. Will do that for a while... I think I am more stressed out about this lil fish's fin than the fish is! lol

Also, what is a good size for a quarantine tank? Would a 5 gallon tank be an OK size or do I need to go bigger?

Good evening OrbWeaver... A 5 gallon tank is a fine size for a quarantine/hospital tank :good: obviously go as big as is allowed but that is a great size for want you want.

Out of pure curiosity, and apologies if it has been explained somewhere before, but why the reasoning behind such frequent water changes? I only ask as you seem to have mature media in your filter (excuse the nosiness :fun: )

Terry.

No prob. I have no algae eater at the moment, I have a bristlenose on order but not sure when he (hopefully a male... ;0) ) will be in, and I have to scrub my glass daily. So, since I am taking my lights off my tank to scrub my tank I do a quick cleaning. 4-8 gallons (i have a 4 gallon bucket) takes me about 10-15 minutes to do. Also, I have fry in my tank (for the first time.. ;0) )and I was told that having really good water condition helps them to develop their color earlier.. (not sure if its true but thought it couldn't hurt.. :) )

I think the real truth is that I am just a lil tank obsessed.. lol

My nephew does water changes each and every day. 3 gallons on a 10 gallon tank. He also vaccumes his room each and every day, sometimes twice a day. Just a little OCD. Could be worse, I guess. I wish my kids cleaned anything like that!!
