Tetra shoal

Most of the time, cardinals are preferred due to their striking colouration and that they are not too active and thus do not agitate discus in any way. However, you will find mixed replies as some will say that the discus will eat, some say they won't. I think it's a matter of trial and error.

P.T.

Go for a minimum of 10 fish to form a school.

The other tetras frequently used in Discus tanks are Rummy nose tetras, the reason being that like cardinals they can tolerate the higher temperatures assosiated with Discus that most other tetras cannot.

So would you get 10 or more? The tank is 180 litre and has 3 juvenile discus, 6 femal fighters, 1 male fighter a starlight ansistra and a gloden nugget.

I wouldnt get any, the tank is already on the verge of being over stocked for a discus tank and adding more fish will lead to excessive nitrate and dissolved organic solid levels in the tank.

Its perfect now so i wouldnt risk adding more fish and causing it to not be perfect, Discus can and will drop dead if the water is not to their liking, especially young fish.

I'm personaly quite worried about having those bettas in there - they can be quite aggressive and are deffinately active for a discus tank and might stress your discus. I hope you have the male seperated of course. Maybe you can get the bettas a different tank and put cardinals in their place instead...?

My bettas are extrememly peaceful and were in the tank before the discus. I have had no problems with them whatsoever. I purchased the tank from my LFS, they know what the tank is like exactly and which fish are in it. They have told me that it would be fine to put 10 cardinal tetras in the tank.

Of course they have, they want you to buy the fish
At the end of the day the choice is yours and whether you take advise from other experienced fishkeepers is down to you.
