I am so annoyed about what happened today that i have to let off some steam about it. Being Christmas eve i went for a look about some of the local shops to see if there was any fish i might like to treat myself to with the money from my Christmas bonus. The first 3 shops i visited had nothing of interest so we took the long way home and popped into the Syon Park branch of Maidenhead aquatics to have a look around and straight away a nice sized flag tail prochilodus in one of the sump tanks marked up at £45 caught my eye, "thats the one" i thought.
I approached the kid standing behind the counter and said i'd like to buy a fish, "which fish" he asked, "the flagtailed prochiodus in the second sump tank" i replied, "oh we dont sell fish from the sump tanks on weekends" he said.
This seemed a little strange to me so i asked why and how long that had been a rule for since i had purchased many fish from the sump tanks before and on weekends, "its because we are really busy and i'm the only person here right now" he said, i took a look around the store and other than myself there was just one couple browsing the tanks, "its not that busy right now, surely you can just net one fish for me" i asked "no he said, management has said that when we are alone we cannot serve from the sump tanks as it leaves the rest of the store unattended, there are signs on the tanks explaining that".
I didnt recall seeing any signs so i went for another look and as i thought there were no signs so i went back to the counter to find the kid serving the other customers using a tall step ladder to reach a high shelf (funnily at that moment i could have just served myself far more easily than i could if he was netting a fish from a tank at floor level).
He finished serving the couple and i asked him if he would be able to net the fish for me as i was now the only customer in the shop, i also mentioned that there were no such signs on the tanks, "there are signs" he said in a sarcastic tone, "i'll show you" and stomped off around to the tanks pointing to the non existant signs, as soon as he realised there were no signs he made some excuse about customers removing them so i asked again "can you net the fish for me now please". "ok but you will have to wait for another member of staff to return" he said. This seemed a little stupid but was better than nothing so i waited, and waited, and waited until finally after some 20 minutes or so two girls returned from lunch and he got a bag and net to catch the fish (which i had to assist with as the net was too small and he caught the fish before filling the bag with water so i had to fill the bag myself because he didnt have a free hand) and then took the bagged fish to the counter, "thats £75 please" he said, now this came as a shock since the card on the tank clearly said £45, "err no, it says £45 on the tank" i exclaimed. The kid and 2 girls whispered ammoungt themselves for a moment before turning back and saying "sorry but thats a mistake on the card and the actual price is £75, you can take it or leave it"
Well to say i was furious by now would be an understatement but instead of following my natural instinct and shaking the little runt until every bone in his body was broken i asked if we could make a deal and that i would be willing to pay £55 for the fish which as being it was their mistake and i had been waiting for nearly an hour now seemed fair, but they refused so the poor fish had to be tipped back into the sump because there was no way i was going to pay £75 for a fish that certainly wasnt worth that ammount.

As soon as Christmas is over i am going to be writing a letter to the MA head office to complain about the service (or lack of) in this particular branch and wont ever be taking my custom (and i spend a lot on fish) or recomending that any one else shop there again.

Too bad CFC, i hope they do get sorted out though

That sucks big time. I bet the poor little Prochilodus would have enjoyed Christmas at CFC land. Stupid muppets. Maidenhead aquatics is a reputable institution though so hopefully they'll do something about it.

dude thats annoying, in england if you have a price tag on something, you have to sell it at that price... Im a manager of a shop most of you probably know called phones 4 u, i manage 4 shops in my area and in some cases ive had a phone marked a wrong price but the customer pays what the phone is marked at, under no circumstances will that change with any product becuase its an english law! anyway that pet shop sounds like its not worth giving them your money and your custom,

I have a similar story, my girlfreind went to a more local pet shop round here in serach for a 3foot hood with light for my christmas present (yayy) When she got there, she said 'do you sell a hood with a light for a 3 foot tank' and let me tell you now, she knows nothing about fish and tanks, aparently the guy turned around and just gave her a strange and aggresive look, he then later said 'what measurements' so she then said 3 foot one of your tanks' , he replied to her there all diffrent sizes, youll have to go back and do your homework love' with this, she felt quite intimidated with the guy and found it very hard to even talk to them about possible sizes it could be. I called him up and told him who it was and asked why he was being such a burk with my gf, He said 'sorry i just get sick of people not knowing what they want'. I said 'you run a shop, you need to help people in order to get sales'. Anyway i went in the shop the next day with my gf and he soon took the aggresive look of his face and i bassicly said to him its a good job you didnt upset her or you might be wearing one of your tanks....... Bassicly i find what it comes down to, alot of pet shop owners/workers simply start to get a big ego and annoyed with shall we say less experienced fish keepers but we all are new to it at some point and we all need help, prefrebly unaggresive nice helpfull people like you lot, anyway if you read all that then maybe someof you have had similar experiences and would like to ***** further onit, have a great christmas all and thanks for all your help,

Did he happen to be one of the spotty ones with the very high voice that comes stright out of The Simpsons?

Seriously though, normally in every shop they'll offer it to you at the marked price, unless it's higher than it should be in which case they'll offer it lower. But writing is in fact a very, very good plan, not only should you get the fish at the marked price but you can hope for some vouchers or something for your trouble :D

Thats dodgy. I bet he was planning on pocketing the extra money too. What a jerk. I hope you get that letter written and sent off. I doubt much will come of it, but maybe!

CFC - I have had the exact same thing happen to me (well similar that is). They will bag the fish, bring it upfront to the counter, and ring it through for twice what it was marked.... I will then correct them and her response is (that is for the smaller ones, this is bigger so he costs more" ... makes me so angry. Or the opposite, they will have exremly small cories for a very cheap price and I will get half dozen, get them up there and they try to charge me normal price that the large cories are.... And unfortunately it is the only LPS that sells fish in my area, and I have to travel 1.5 hours just to get to any crappy chain stores.

I have been lucky recently, been using these forums and others to find local, or at least somewhat local breaders in my area and buy fish directly from them. For the most part they are more then willing to sell to me as they like knowing there fry are going. rather then die in some LFS crappy tanks.

edit: also, make sure you write your letter after Christmas and get it sent off. Complaing never hurts, and hopefully something good will come out of it.

I admire your patience CFC. I'd have gone mad. Truly, truly mad. Nothing quite like that has ever happened to me. It's always been much less frustrating and calling a manager or just a different employee has solved the problem. Your story is just ridiculous - I can imagine how pissed off you were. But did you get a fish for Christmas after all?

Thanks for the responses everyone. Somewhat suprisingly after making this post i recieved an email from a manager of another branch of MA who kindly gave me a number to take the matter up with the area manager which i will do so after the christmas period.

Sylvia i didnt manage to buy any fish on this trip as by the time i had finished messing about there wasnt enough time to get to another shop but hopefully i'll find something that takes my fancy after new year.

That sucks CFC, I'm glad I had some better luck getting my christmas fish this year :p

I don't think I've ever had service that bad, hopefully with your letter you won't get that service again :)

Hehe, it never pays to be rude or dishonest with customers. You never know who will find out and report you to the boss.

£45 for a flag tail thats even expensive my maiden head aquatics sell them for £25 and they have great service anything a fishkeeper wants :D

damn cfc i would of drowned that boy in the fish tanks and walk out casually dragging his body across floor while you put him in your boot ready for your arowana to eat

What I would have done while he was on the ladder was grab a bag and a net run back to the tank, scoop the fish out into the bag of water then tied it up and say "here I bagged it for you, now ring it up now before I just walk off with this fish" then when he want to charge that price I would have said "the tank says 45 and thats what I'm paying" then hand him the money and cuss him out as your walking out the door. That is exactly what I would have done or send him to the back of the store to get a fish and do the same thing as above and walk out without paying. That just isn't right

You're actually completely wrong mate. The marked up price is an offer of sale price. The only relevant price is that which the shop-keeper accepts it for. The only reason to accept the lower price is to keep customer goodwill.

It is certainly not set down in statute, cos otherwise how did Argos get out of not providing a number of tellies a while ago for 27p where someone put the price on wrong on the internet site?

CFC - Bad luck mate. Hopefully you'll find something nicer anyhow.
