Temprature

my 15 gal tank needs heated and is at 77 all the time i recently aquired a new 4ft 40gal tank its been going now for a month and moved the fish i wanted in my big tank gradually my temp in my big tank sits in the lower 80's without a heater ive got a fluval 2 filter and upon cleaning it noticed that the filter gives off some heat is this y i dont need a heater in my big tank if i put the heater in it never comes on.why r the 2 tanks different??

its the filter. If you worry about the temp, you should get a canister or HOB filter.
