Tank Journal - Hillstream Temperate River

It's the gobies who I think may be breeding. The only article I could find documenting the species I have was on pfk. Apparantly the female will be banished from the cave and the male will guard it for around a week without leaving looking after the eggs.

My bad---did not read this carefully. Yes, and you should give them a pvc ---- if they decide to use it instead of digging, you have more control.

Oh that's a good idea, that way I can move them to a smaller species only setup. Have you ever bred any rhinogobius species?

Yes, if you want I can give you my paper on breeding R.diospilus. But your species will be different, it sees to produce many small eggs rather than very few large ones....

I have been sat here for an hour and not seen either of the gobies once. I guess that they are in the cave under the rock. The only way I could possibly see in now is by taking the background off as they have fortified the front today. May just leave them to it for now though, dont really want to disturb them.

Here is a little clip of one of my lighter coloured (possibly due to it being a juvenile) P.Myersi munching on an algae wafer last night:

Well my female Goby came out of the cave for the first time since it all started. She has not been back in since. She has lost her belly and has slimmed back down. I am hoping that this means that eggs have been laid and that the male is guarding them. I have not really seen him since thursday.

I got in from work and decided to have a look under the rock where I thought that the male Goby was hiding. There he was sat in the sand with around 60-70 eggs stuck to the rock above him :hyper:

I wanted these the survive, so I legged it to pets at home and bought a clearseal 18x10x10 tank. Half an hour later, it was set up with a filter and a heater. I then carefully moved the whole rock into its new temporary home. Here is a video of the grand unveiling:

I have never moved eggs to another tank to hatch so any pointers would be appreciated!!!

Congratulations!

The main idea with goby eggs is to allow the male to take care of them for as long as possible...move the eggs when they eye up...the success rate tends to be better this way.

Thanks.

Oh crud. The female left the cave on Sat / Sun, so I guess that they have around another 5 or 6 days until hatching? In your experience, how long does it take for them to eye up? I may just leave them where they are this time now and call it part of the learning curve!

I don't think anyone knows the hatch time for your species. You can only see when they eye up (or, conversely, fungus). In your place I probably would have left them alone for 5 days, then checked.
(The biggest danger to the eggs at this time IME would be from a 2nd female.... but you have only a pair, so most likely the male can take care of them for now. You cannot allow the eggs to hatch in the tank, but best to remove them as late as possible.)

Thanks for that. I have just been upstairs and the new tank is leaking slightly from a corner. I do not believe it, but it serves me right for rushing I guess. I am going to silicone it and put the eggs back in the big tank for a couple of days until it is safe. Probably best for them that way. I hope the male resumes his guarding of them.

I put the stone back in the big tank for now whilst the silicone is drying. I have just been back up to check around ten minutes later and the male Goby is nowhere to be seen. I guess that he is back with his eggs.
