I have a 37 Gallon FW community tank, but most of the fish swim close to the bottom. What kind of fish tend to swim closer to the top?

Current Occupants:
(Please excuse spelling)
2 Pristella Tetras
2 Serpae Tetras
2 Rainbow Neons
2 X-Ray Catfish
2 Mickey Mouse Playtts
1 Red Wag
1 Tri-Color shark (Bala)
2 Chocolate Pleckos
1 pink Tetra
1 blue Tetra
7 mini Neon Tetras

FYI: Fluval 404 MSF, Triton Bulb

Hatchets will mostly swim on top. African butterfly fish will stay on top for sure.

Please realize, the bala shark will get to be (I believe) 14" and requires lots of swimming room. The chocolate pleco (can't find info on www.planetcatfish.com) will probably get to be about 4".

The normal stocking guide is 1" of fish for every gallon of water, which applies to fish under 3". Larger fish should be stocked at 1" of fish for every (at the most) 5 gallons of water. This is becuase larger fish produce more waste, require more swimming room, are a bit more aggressive.

The pristella and serpae tetras can have an attitude at times and can be fin nippers.

I have read that Chocolate Plecs will get to more like 12"!! I have seen photos of some pretty massive looking ones!

I have a silver hatchet fish in my tank and he is at the top 99% of the time.

Hatchets are wonderful top dwellers. Just remember they are schooling fish so you should get at least 3-6 of them.

A while ago I had a small school of (what are they called again?) diptail pencilfish. If I ever find any anywhere again, I will get some, but until then the hatchets rule the skies.
