How old are the baby fry when they begin to get colour in their tail, and how old before you cant tell female from male.

Sorry I am a new granmummy and curious :)

Are you talking about Guppy's?
Mine were a couple of months but then one started a lot laterhad me thinkin he was a girl and everything!

It's sometimes hard to tell guppy genders apart. I was able to tell what I had when my guppies were 4 weeks. Males anal fins are more pointed, even if it's just a little, though it seems like every day it becomes a bit more pointed.

Now, at almost 5 weeks, my guppies are just starting to get color. Of course, their gray and black came in around 3 weeks. With this, it's just a matter of time. Males tend to get their colors before females.

i have a little boy in my tank that i kept from a recent drop. he's about a month old and his tail and body are already coloring up, but i could tell it was a boy at about 2 1/2 weeks. it depends on the fish cuz they all develop at different rates. hope this helps

I find black shows up first on the guppy(could be just a dot on the tail at first) and in my fry it can show within 5 weeks time. Then lightly i see blues or greens at 8-10 weeks and from there colours deepen and grow and patterns develope. As for sexes, at around 3-4 months you can start to tell for sure b/c sometimes you swear its gonna be a male but then it ends up being a female half black. So at around 3-4 months gonopodiums on the males are showing.

My lone surviving guppy fry is female, and her tail turned a light blue color... so I thought that was what is was gonna be... now its totally different... her bottom part of the tail is dark blue, the middle part is light blue, and the top is light purple.. its pretty cool, and she has some spot designs along with it... she is 4 months old.
