I was chatting to my sister on the phone, gazing out of my living room window onto the patio and I suddenly blurted out, mid conversation, "Ooooh!! Hedgehog!!"

Haven't seen a hedgehog up close in years! been a while since I had one in my back garden (well, never where I live at the moment). It decided to hide in little bushy area under a young tree just at the top of the patio. I went out and had a look and he/she seemed to be just resting up, or staying still!

I tried to snap a pic but didn't want to disturb it too much so didn't get anything worth while. It looked quite big though which is cool.

I guess my question is, what do you feed a hedgehog? I know bread and milk is the traditional thing, and that its not good for them. I've read catfood is good, is this true?

I'd love to encourage it to stick around!

As a vet nurse, we used to feed them catfood until they went onto the sanctuary - which sometimes took a good few weeks for them to move along.
I can't see this being a staple diet long term in captivity, but as a basic staple & treat, not bad. They are messy little b*ggers though and riddled with fleas and ticks and other nasty goodies

If he decides to eat all the slugs/snails that are waging a seige on my nice potted herbs right now I'll be more than happy

i have hedgehogs in my garden, i have a very large shed which they hide/live under, my 2 dogs always whine when they see them as they dont know what to do with them hehe :)

awwwww i'd love to have hedgehogs around here, love to have a garden for that matter! closest we get is the odd occasion one of the cats actually manages to catch something and brings us a present

no the presents are not pleasant, perhaps if they'd catch a pheasant it would be a more pleasant present

I don't think any pheasants present would find that a pleasant present.

Ooh, a rhyming contest! ;)

Well, no sign of my garden visitor since spotting him :( I didn't manage to get any cat food or anything so I guess he's moved on! Oh well, I'll keep an eye out :)
