Hi, I haven't posted in a while, but I am looking to replace my dead apistos with something, preferably different. I originally started out with three apisto cacs a year ago; one male and two female. The male formed a pair with one immediately, bred with her all of the time, and basically ignored the other most of the time, although they did spawn once that I did see. That female did die a while back, I think from being bullied quite a bit by the other female... The pair that were left still spawned and seemed fine.

Everything changed after I got my breeding pair of adult discus back in March. The pair of apistos seemed to stay around the back of the tank a bit more and not come out of their cave too much. Everything was fine until the female suddenly died a month or so back due to unknown causes. The params were fine, and she had no physical trauma/damage or disease that I could see (I managed to fish her out right away and had a look). After that, the male started to seem a bit lethargic and stopped eating. I didn't get any more apisto cac females because I was going on holiday for a month. While I was on holiday, I had a friend come round to do wc's once a week, and he said that he would never see the male eat, and on his last visit, last week, the male was dead, RIP.

Now I am thinking about what I want to replace them with, and need some suggestions? I was thinking rams, but haven't kept them before. I love the look of the gbr, but also the electric blue. I believe that they are more difficult to sex that apistos, is that correct? Therefore how many should I get if I did go with rams? Do they prefer to be kept on pairs or harems like apistos? Tank is a moderately heavy planted 240l, with a shoal of cardinals, a breeding pair of discus, 5 hatchetfish, and one bristle nose plec. Water is kept at 82f/28c, and Ph is 6.2. Thanks.

I don't know a ton about rams but it sounds like your setup would be perfect for them. As far as sexing them goes it can be difficult as adolescents but when they show breeding colors it is much simpler. How I understand it mature females usually have a pink hue on their belly and a rounded edge to their dorsal fin, they also have some reflective scales in their false eye spot whereas males have a few extended rays toward the front of their dorsal fin and a very distinct false eye spot.

As far as keeping pairs over harems I'm not sure, with 240l worth of tank I imagine you could have a good number of them though so long as there are plenty of caves or shaded hiding spots. Hope this helps, maybe someone who has kept rams before can confirm/correct some of this info.

Totally agree with above :)

Try and find wild Blue Rams (Mikrogeophagus Rameriez) your tank is absolutely perfect for them! Discus requirements meet the same thing for Rams. The important thing to do is to try and get F1 or wild caught Rams for a reputable supplier, so you can confidently know they are definitely wilds.

If you want to go for a colour morph again find a reputable source so as that the breeding line has been crossed regularly back with wild fish. A lot of the colour morphs can come only a few generations from wild so there is still a chance to find them.

Thanks. I gave decided against electric blues because of all the stories about how they are so hard to keep alive, etc. I would love to find some wilds, but I never see any up here anywhere. Put an ad on aquaristclassifieds anyway. All the ones I have seen in the shops look average at best currently. Maybe I will just hold off until I can locate some wilds? I keep checking eBay too, but not much at the moment.

Also considering something like the redbreasted acara or flag acara. Anyone had any experience with these?

+1 on Rams. Just try the bolivian rams. In my 3 years of fishkeeping I have found them hardy. Until one day the tank broke.

I just really think that your tank is perfect for Blue Rams :) Im not sure how the Laetacaras would cope in the higher temperatures...

So I know that this thread was from 100 years ago, but I did decide to go with GBR's in the end

I have had them for about a month now, and they are colouring up very nicely and getting larger and larger.  I was holding off for over month to find wilds, but there seemed to be none anywhere in the UK, so I finally just went with some tank breds.  Then, the week I got them, some wilds popped up in rare aquatics all of a sudden, of course, lol!  Anyways, I am happy with the ones I got, so nothing lost.  I was a bit concerned at one point when on the 5th or 6th day, one of them wasn't looking too hot, and was just staying on the bottom and not feeding or swimming.  I went to bed fearing the worst, but the next day, it was totally fine and back to normal.  They do like to occasionally chase my cardinals though

I got a photo of the one that I believe is female (if someone could confirm?), but the male is just being too fast tonight.  I cant get a good shot of his so I will try again tomorrow.  They are pretty young still I believe, but she is starting to colour up pretty nicely...

Looks 100% female to me, nice fish. You can tell cause she has blue spangles on her spot males wont have this, better way to tell if they don't have a pink belly.

Yes, that is what I thought!  Here is a picture of the two of them together.  The male (?) is so fast it's really hard for me to get a good pic.  I believe that this is a male in the front, correct?  It was so much harder to tell when I first got them!

Well, the male is now dead...  Was fine last night and then didn't look too hot this evening, and just now found him belly up.  No apparent reason.  Water stats are fine.  Discus are laying eggs.  Ugh!  Now I just have the one female, she also looks fine.  What should I do, should I get another male for the female as soon as, or can she be on her own for a bit?
