Given that I am fairly new to this, don't take this as God, but if your tank is ready (cycled) - I would try Platys for first fish, they are lively, come in lots different colours, seem to be quite hardy, .. in fact the only prob you may get is they breed very quick! and lots!!

:D

As Oohfeeshy says, one needs to know the size of the tank first. Here are some possibilities with different common tank sizes (note a selection only- you can't keep all those in any one tank):

3-5 gallons: single male betta (Siamese fighter); shrimps

5 gallons: the above or pygmy corydoras, endler livebearers

15 gallons: the above + guppies, platies, most tetras, corydoras, khuulie loaches, cherry barbs

30 gallons: the above+ danios, swordtails, bristlenose plec, golden barbs

First of all, you need to find out about getting the tank safe for fish to live in- so check out the topics on cycling. If you do fishless cycling, this will give you many more fish to choose from.

Secondly, be careful not to overstock.

Thirdly, never buy a fish until you have researched it. You need to know whether it is territorial or schooling, if it needs to be in special gender ratios, if it has any special water requirements, any special dietary requirements, if it is very active or very timid, and not least what size it will grow to as an adult (most of the fish you see in the shops are juveniles).
