Spay Or Neuter Your Pets!

Fawke I'm sorry you've had that experience, I'd feel dejected too. But please don't let the naff blanket rule of one rescue put you off, they're not all the same as I found out. I know where you can get help to find a dog suitable for your family:

http://www.rykat.org/forums/index.php?act=idx - The Refuge, great board where rescuers and adopters get together to chat (and advertise dogs in their care). It's a really friendly place, and I'm sure they'll be able to help (they've organised homechecks and even transport runs, they're great).

Sorry to hear Fawke :/ that was the kind of blanket rule I was talking about and then you can't blame people for looking at other alternatives.

But there are still many options available - which I'm sure you probably know about.
But just in case:if you are interested in a specific breed, do some googles on breed specific rescues - they are also almost always overflowing with dogs that are being fostered in various homes, waiting to find permanent new owners to go to.

Here is another great forum (Dogpages) where there are many dogs available for adoption or you could place a "wanted" ad.

Good luck - sounds like you have a fantastic home to offer :good:

thanks for the two links.

been reading through and its amazing what people out there are doing for these dogs, to give them a chance of a home. great to see so much info as well. we have to be quite picky  not concerned about breed but it has to be female and smaller than a lab so it gets on with the inlaws dog (another rescue with quirky hangups!) Add to that it has to get on with the Kids and want an active life.

as we keep saying, we want the right dog not a quick one! both links added to favourites

many thanks

So unless you really have a kitty of several thousands stashed away, or you're really rich and several thousand pounds is small change, or can live with the guilt of having to decide to put your pet to sleep because you couldn't afford a several thousand pound treatment - I'd fork out the ?10 odd a month thank you very much.
Thats just what i have after all when you have multible pets the insurance would cost me £140 a month and i have been putting £100 a month in the bank for 8 years so where would you rather have the money in the bank or give it away to an insurance company

I'm with those that would rather save than give to insurance... if you're a person that really does save on a regular basis, it's a real money saver, especially if it turns out you never do need to pay any costly vet bills! You don't earn interest on the money you give to the insurance company, after all. It works better if you already have a little nest egg saved up, of course, so you have a cushion to fall back on. Insurance works better for those who aren't so good at saving though, so I guess it's just a matter of what works best for you :)

I just want to add... the whole statement of most of the dogs in shelters being strays, old, or sick, that is a HUGE misconception! People feel that there's an overpopulation mostly because of stray dogs, so so wrong. Although there are strays out there and they should be saved & rehomed, from working at the SPCA and seeing tons of litters come in, the vast majority of pups come from BYB's. I agree that litters should be bred responsibly, but it's so much more than that. Only dogs who have been proven to be a wonderful example of their breed in shows & work need be bred. Think of every person with a family dog breeding that dog. That equals an average of 5+ pups per family per year... which equals at least 4 of those pups on average will end up in a shelter, basically. And most will end up in a shelter between the age of 6 months - 2 years. Even if every person that breeds their pet dog gives them shots & vet check ups and such, there will still be a huge overpopulation. Which is why people need to stop seeing breeding as a fun side-project for money or something that should naturally be done, and start seeing it as something that needs to be left to those who dedicate their lives to showing, working & breeding.

My dog Ty is neutered! It broke my heart leaving him at the vets as he was pulling to get at me and it took the nurse 20mins to get him into the room where they keep them! I'm glad he's been neutered though even if he looked funny with the lamp shade round his head to stop him from licking!
