The video is pretty self explanitory. Even if you breed your dog and find homes for the puppies, think about the dog that that one person could of saved from death from a shelter, but instead bought from you! And I am not directing this at anybody, but this subject can not be stressed enough!

Some info I found out when we were losing our rescue Boxer Ruby to mammary cancer:

If you spay before the first season, the risk of mammary cancer is nigh on obliterated, and is a mere 0.05%.

If you spay after the first season and before the 2nd, the risk is cut to 8%.

If you spay after the 2nd season, the risk is 26%.

That's over one in four unspayed or late spayed bitches developing mammary cancer. If Ruby's old owners had thought to spay her before her first season, she'd be alive now :( Instead she died of mammary cancer at the "grand old" age of just 7.

Obviously with very large or giant breeds, there is some concern about spaying before the first season. We spayed Dharma after her first season (not out of choice, she had a silent season so we couldn't spay her before).

It's everyone's right to make an informed choice and choose what they feel safest with.

that video was so sad :-( my dog has been neutered :)

see I know it's a good idea to, and my cats been spayed (kitten will be when she's old enough, only 10 weeks so a little way to go) but I felt awful after it had been done. Felt like I'd deprived my cat of the chance to be a mummy  was gutted for days afterwards, anyone else feel like that?

yeah i did, and after his operation he seemed so sad for the next couple of days and he hid under the table :( plus i thought he should have been a daddy but i know it was for the best

glad I'm not the only one, I felt mental worrying over it!

Gonzo is neutered and Fozzie will be neutered when he's 6 months, of course. All rescues in my area require altering dogs, but I would absolutely speuter my dogs even if they're gorgeous purebreds. Breeding just needs to be left to people who dedicate their lives to improve their breed of dog/cat, if everyone bought their next puppy & kitten from a reputable breeder or from the pound and had their animal altered, this country's overpopulation would be drastically reduced! It's sad that so many pups die in shelters, yet so many BYB's/mills/pet stores are consistently profiting from their abuse & irresponsibility. Totally messed up. -_-

I think everyone gets a little down just thinking that the dog/cat they love will never reproduce, it's human nature. But, when you think of all of the little puppies & kittens in shelters out there who will never get the chance to have a happy life, or to even HAVE a life, because others did not make the responsible decision that you made... it makes up for that emptiness. You can always adopt another kitten or puppy!

Dharma's a pedigree bullmastiff, and quite a good one. Never once deflected me from spaying her, I would never inflict her puppies on the world

I think this video, which you can find linked from the other one but that I've seen before, made more of an impact on me. It's two euthanasia technicians talking about their job... that must be a miserable job, but in a way, I think it would be an honorable one.
