Ok, I've come into a bit of free cash and I've got the fish bug, so I'm pretty certain that I'm going to get a set of plecs come November. The question then just becomes: L66 or L260? I think I can get the 66 a bit cheaper, but I also think that the 260s might show up better in my tank (very high tannin levels). I'm looking at some wild caughts, so I'm also concerned about relative hardiness.

Decisions, decisions... Also, do you think that I could risk a baby (2") L114 with these smaller plecs? I'm guessing "no" based on the description of L114s as being big and irritable adults, but oh what sexy fish they are!

hello mate... whats the tank size?

The L114's are pretty shy fish.
So as long as there are plenty of hiding places and your tanks a good size the I cant see why a pair of L260's and an L114 wouldn't work ;)

If you are looking to breed - its a different matter and I'd stick to just the 260s but get a few more of them ;)

50 gallon: 36x18x18

hiding spots, however, are a bit few and far between right now... :/ only one true cave and the rest are in the shadow of various bogwoods. i'll try to remember to put a pic up later

these were taken the first night that i set up my decor, so the arrangement of items is the same but everything is now covered with a thin layer of algae.

that log under all the rocks is a perfect hollow tube. :)

i intend to get some more rocks to scatter about in the front at some point and i also hope to get some rooted plants started at some point.

So are all 3 of those species Ancistus species?
'Cause they are going to love that tank!

that looks ok to me :)

You'll need a few small caves to the 260's (Hypancistrus species) (we use slate caves with internal dimensions of approx 120x50x25)

The L114 (Pseudacanthicus species) will love that tank :)

 I couldn't wait to find a supply of 260s (could only find them at 6 for $150+shipping), so I went ahead and won a set of L66s! :D I'm so excited to finally have plecs again!

just ironed out the details and i'm getting a group of 6 wild-caughts for $98 total. :hyper: i couldn't do better than if i got them from the LFS.

sorry for the double post, but again, i am so so excited about this.... expect breeding questions from me in the near future!

--EDIT--
haha, i should have done this for the last post. goes to show what i'm busy thinking about :p

i know these are primarily carnivorous. do you think that they'd go for some frozen silversides? or should i stick to the Hikari carnivore pellets and frozen bloodworm?

I've only had an L066 for a couple of weeks ( I'm well chuffed with mine too :D )but it's favourite food so far is courgette. I found this strange as planet catfish describes them as carnivores and not even omnivores. I've seen it also eat prawns and I'm sure it's eating the other meaty food I add to the tank. It might be an idea to add some veg to the tank to see if they like it too.

Andy :)

I couldnt make my mine up either so go a L066 one month and an L260 the month after the queen is a nice looking plec mines a bit shy at the mo and hides away. the king tiger sits on top of the rock/bogwood like he owns the place :D

I want to see them! :hyper: Show me pictures!

Is it this one? L066

yup yup :) The seller is putting them in the mail today and since it's just from Oregon, they should get here either tomorrow or Thursday. They came with a live arrival guarantee and are being shipped in breather bags, so I'm not too worried about it not being overnight.

 I sent a link to the auction to my boyfriend (who is not a fishy person) and even he thinks they look really cool. Of course, his exact words were "They look like little aliens" but I'll take what I can get. :p He's excited for me too and that's all that matters.

--EDIT--

That's good to hear that they aren't particularly shy fish. I'm too busy now to sit around for an hour waiting on the plecs to come out. :D

That's great! It took my L316s a few months but they are out and about now and letting me snap flashes for photos without running. At first I worried if they were eating, cause they never came out.

As Polardbear says, "Bounce bounce bounce! My fish are in the mail! Bounce bounce bounce!"

Feh, so I just got back from picking the fish up at the post office. 5 of the 6 look really good and are busy acclimating. The 6th one was DOA :( Looks like he died in the night.

I'll let you know whether the seller honors their guarantee.
