So I Was Googling And Ran Into This Gem

Wow those are amazing. I would love to do that one day and see tangs in their natural environment. Truly stunning.

The good thing about cichlids is that most of the time they will breed in captivity :) SO the lake might not have changed much.
 
Cichlids were once marine fish and millions of years ago when the oceans levels dropped, alot were trapped in massive lakes and over time the salt water lakes turned into freshwater but because of there origins they still need a high PH thats why alot of fish keepers have coral sand and ocean rock with there cichlids it maintains the high PH

This doesn't explain the cichlids from SA. They may have come from the sea, but i think they adapted to the hard water of the lakes because it has so many rocks/sand in the lakes hardening the water.
