My tank is about 3 months old. I wash my plants before i put them in my tank to get off all the snails, but they seem to just keep coming back. I have hundreds. How do i get ride of them. I picked some out. Do i get an assasin snail? Thanks :) Also they poop everywhere which is such a pain.

Put a piece of lettuce in the water before your go to bed. The next morning the lettuce should be covered with snails. Take out the snails and the lettuce. Repeat until all of the snails are gone.

How much and how often do you feed the fish?
Snail population blooms are most commonly caused by overfeeding.
Also try the lettuce as xero tolerance suggested.

Snails = If you have sand at the bottom of your tank...this will be a problem... Snails most likely breed in sand. There is a snail killer you can put into your tank but it may have a chance to harm your fish. If you do try it, put your fish in another tank just to be sure of healthiness. Get rid of your snails as soon as possible to ensure health of your fish.

Happy to Help! :good:

Snails cause no problems in tanks; unless lots of them happen to die at once.

The main cause of mass infestations of snails is over feeding; reduce the amount of food you give the fish, and the snails will naturally (and gradually) reduce in numbers.

There is absolutely no need to kill them or get rid of htem; they are part of a normal tank eco sytem and do very valuable work turning over substrate and eating left over food and dead plants.

+1

The problem is overfeeding, pure and simple. Cut down the food and the snail population will drop.

No problem! Glad I could help! I would recommend cutting down on how much you feed before you do the lettuce idea. If the snails don't go away in two weeks than I would resort to the lettuce. ;)

I have heard of some kind of fish that eats snails. Forgot what is is. Maybe a tiger fish... I know it has stiped. I used them and the snails were gone in days and never returned.

i wouldnt use snail killer or another fish its not needed. once you have them you prob always will but they are not harmfull. i love assassins and have quite a few now. they do wonders for my tank and i like the way they look too.

Assassin snails are great for population control, as well as reducing feeds. Though snails are not harmful, they can look unsightly in large numbers, I'm not that keen on them either.

No, only if your daft enough to use a snail killer and have suddenly have hundreds of dead rotting snails!

I've got snails of various kinds in all my tanks, and my fish are perfectly healthy.
