i have had a few snails now and they seem to struggle on sand and die. Any ideas of what snails are good at staying up right and are good on sand?

Thanks

How long have you had them for? because I had snails...assasin snails and apple/mystery snails and zebra snails in my aquarium but they keep on dying. The last onces to inhabit the tank were the zebra snails and assassin snails and they both died with in the week....I think they don't like the sand period... The apple snails lasted the longest but they they all died as well. I had those about 2 months.

Wont be the sand i have 400 apples snails on sand(yeah 400 not 40 lol), 7 assassin snails and 6 nirate snails on sand all alive and well over a year old some :good:

Yep sand is not a problem for snails :good: .

What is far more likely is that they're starving to death- this is the way a lot of aquarium snails go (particularly apple snails). They don't compete with fish for food well and if there isn't another source of food in the tank (edible algae suitable for the snails, dying aquatic plants, uneaten food etc) then they'll just gradually die off.

Personally i found the best solution was weighted cucumber- it takes a while to go off in aquarium water and so doesn't quickly foul water quality if uneaten, but its also stable enough to last long enough for the snails to get a good munch on it. My apple snails have thrived on cucumber (i also feed them algae wafers as they only share the aquarium with swortdails, amano shrimp & a para pleco) and the tanks substrate is fine natural sand too  .

400?? sweet...It must be something in the water for me anyhow. I was feeding my snails vegetables...like broccoli and lettuce.

Thanks guys, also lost my two shrimp. Would that be the same reason? What can i feed them?

They'll eat pretty much anything. Have you thought about testing your water for copper? That will kill off both snails and shrimps if present.

Thank you for this! I just got two apple snails a couple weeks ago, and they're in a 10g with my 9 baby tiger barbs and murderous molly. They've been acting a little sluggish (pardon the pun) and it just dawned on me it might be because they don't get enough food ... the other fish tend to gobble up any tiny bits of food in the tank and I'm sure leave none for the snails. I just dropped in a couple of algae wafers and they're going for it! I'll be transferring the barbs to my 55g today anyway but this is great to know. Thanks!

Catfish pellets and tomato (an end slice with no seeds) are favourites with my snails.

Dont forget to throw in a tum tablet every now and again, 300mg elemental calcium does wonders for there shell. This year i have hatched sold and 1,700 odd apples snails all with great results. I have now closed my snail tank and have 50 or so left :good:

Will this work in a community tank? They're in with a couple dozen cories and some endler guppies.
