HI there,

My names Steven. I'm new to the forum. Been looking for a good forum and it looks like lots of questions get answered here so i thought i'd give it a try.

I'm in Queensland, Australia.

Does anyone know what type of snail this is? It's about 4 inches long.

Lame shell question: Is there a difference between a Conch and a Trumpet shell?

Welcome to the forum :hi:

Unfortunately I'm rubbish on invert ID's. Donya is probably the best person to answer.

I have been looking! Will post back when I have some ideas. Annoyingly, I'm pretty sure I saw one of these labeled in a collection of gastropod pictures recently, but of course I can't refind it now.

Is this a locally-collected snail?

Conch and a Trumpet shell

Common names are iffy, especially those two.
- True conch = Strombus genus snails.
- "Conch" more generally can also refer to some carnivorous/predatory whelks as well as true conches. For example, horse conches are not true conches.
- Trumpet shell ususally refers to carnivorous snails like Charonia species (also called triton's trumpet or triton shells).

interesting. Well it's local for me! :p From Coolum on the sunshine coast, Queensland, Australia.

I will probably be releasing back in the exact spot i found it in the next couple of days.

Looks like a type of Cymatium, perhaps Cymatium parthenopeum. These are relatives of the Triton's trumpet snail and are predatory. Not something that belongs in a reef or community tank, but probably interesting in a species tank with sufficient filtration to accomodate any mess from feeding.

Obligatory release note: if the snail has been kept in a tank with any non-native fauna (including LR/substrate/etc.), then placing it back into the wild is not a good idea due to the ecological risk involved.

it's ok. everything i have is native caught. the only thing i have that isnt is the clown in my main tank, but nothing that goes in there ever goes back to the beach.

yeah that determinately looks like the one. thanks heaps!
