I just thought I'd share some pictures of my favorites from the shelter. They're a huge part of my life, and some will actually be my dogs, if they aren't already.

Here's Bailey, she's a pretty old girl and hugely overweight, we've tried everything and had her to tons of vets. She just keeps getting worse, lately she's been miserable. We think it may be time to just let her go. But we're spoiling her as much as we can. If she lives longer she will be coming home with me as she's one of my favorites. But I have my doubts.

Kenny here with the googley eyes came in a couple years ago. He's terrified of just about everything and everyone until he gets to know you. But he hates cameras. We always joke that one day his eyeballs will just fall out!

Ceasar here was one of my favorites, and the one that took a huge chunk out of my hand(totally on accident he meant to get the dog that stole his toy but got my hand instead). He came in with two other shepherds both females one white and one silver and black. He and his other white sister never left my side while they were at the shelter. I always had them out with me off the leash, luckily they both have great homes now.

This is my Ziggy, another one that is bound for my house if he doesn't get another home. He was a stray but we know where he belongs and he had an absolutely terrible life. He's so greatful at the shelter and loves it there. He's another follower of mine, and he's constantly my loving companion.

Smoothie was brought in as a stray and covered with fleas. This is her saying, "Thanks for getting those bugs off of me!!"

Shiloh was brought in as a stray, and he's an older boy so his chance of adoption is pretty slim since no one wants the older ones except for us workers.
"Hey whaduya doin?"

This is Chrystal, she got adopted yesterday, but she really had a lovely smile! She came in because the woman decided that she could no longer afford her.

This sad face was a stray, but she looks terrible, with mange, and she had eye infections and ear infections. This is right after she came in. I took the picture because sometimes sights like this really make people change their minds about shelters, and what we see, and go through. She however looks tons better today, and is recovering very well.

Charlie was abused and was brought in by the man that had been abusing him. He was so terrified we couldn't get him out from under this chair for days. Now he's in a happy family with a life that is close to heaven.

Cruiser was found as a stray and is terrified of being on a leash. We had a terrible time getting him into the shelter. But now he's all smiles.

Mandy beagle, cuddles up in her dog box on a cloudy day. She was a stray and brought in by the dog warden. She's been at the shelter for quite a few years. And still to this day if she hears Skip the dog warden pull in she goes nuts, she simply hates him for bringing her in.

Here's another Ziggy, we had him as a puppy and that scar on his nose is from the man that owned him before we got him. He wrapped a piece of wire around his mouth to keep him quiet. Now he has a life long scar.

Ol' Grandad here is a great example of how people throw away their dogs when they get older. We found him as a stray, and he was in terrible shape. We kept him for a few weeks at the shelter. And eventually we decided to euthanize him because he was just so sick.

And of course my Scooby, most of you know his story. Chained outside as a puppy he never got socialized. He's a little nutty but will be coming home with me asap. Since I'm the only one he listens to and won't bite. But I'd rater him have a great life with me than die now. He really deserves a chance.

Hope you all enjoyed. :)

Aww those dogs really pulled at my heartstrings. Arent some people just downright cruel. Once we get into our own home we are going to rescue an older dog, they deserve the dignity.
Aww those faces :-(
You and everyone who works for these animals welfare are angels.

Wonderful! I wish everyone would take an older dog. They're potty trained. And won't rip your sofa apart. And just want love and attention. :)

Great pictures. I admire people who work in shelters. I'm sure the money isn't great (a job people do for the love of animals and not the money) and as you said, you see some really bad stuff and are forced at times to put an animal down. It has to be hard to take in an animal and try to nurse it back to health only to realize, as you said with Ol Grandad, that they can't make it and need to be euthanized. My wife has always said that when (not if) we hit the lottery she wants to open a shelter and take in every animal that needs a home (that's why we need the lottery).

I used to work at an RSPCA too - it broke my heart but made me happy too.
Sad to see so many animals come but very happy to see them find wanting and caring homes.

Those are some fabulous pics you too and really pulls on the heart strings

You might enjoy This thread of mine which is also about an old neglected dog - you probably wouldn't have seen it as the last post in there was just a few days before you joined.....

What a great rescue there. It's sad that upon seeing those pictures, I thought to myself, "That looks like some of the dogs I've seen at the shelter." Who gladly are still all alive and well. We are a no kill and atleast give them a chance, we have dogs there that have been living at the shelter for years, some up to 10 years. They're happy there. And they love it.

Awesome pictures ^^ And very touching stories. I think it is wonderful that you are so devoted to shelter animals.

I volunteer for a few shelters and rescues. My favorite is the Animal Rescue Foundation, a very small, private, not-profity shelter in Beacon. They are no-kill and can house about 14 dogs, and ~ 100 cats, at any given time. They are currently adding an extra area for FeLV cats. Some of the shelter dogs were there from puppyhood and never adopted for whatever reason, but they don't seem to mind. They have a 1 acre yard that they can enjoy alone or with friends, and are walked at least 6 times a day on a beautiful woodland trail with a stream by volunteers.

There is a dog there I would *love* to have, but because he is poor with other animals, I could not endanger them taking him in; it only takes a second for a large dog to kill a chicken, rabbit, or cat. He came in 100% feral, and all of the vets advised us to put him down because he'd never be a good dog. He is pit and chow, two breeds with bad reps, and was dog agressive, person agressive, and terrified. He has now been at the shelter for ~ 2.5 years and is a wonderful dog. He loves people, makes fast friends with female dogs, tolerates passive male dogs, and is very good about being handled. He is not good with cats or small animals, but I certainly don't blame a dog for having a prey drive. He walks nicely on a leash and is house broken as well.
Well. Kennel broken. Believe it or not, this dog has never been in a house before in his life. He was born 100% feral to a feral dog colony down by a river in Beacon. He was caught at about a year and a half of age, and has been in a shelter ever since. It is probably his biggest adoption obstacle, though they are going to start having 'overnights' with him to get him used to homes. Apparently someone took him home once, and he absolutely freaked out and tried to run through thier door to get away. :/

Those are great pictures, JackDemp. I love how each one has a story. I worked in a shelter for 3 years too and know how rewarding and frustrating it can be all at the same time. Out of curiosity, did the vets that looked at Bailey ever test her for Cushing's Disease? I'm sure you are giving her a fantastic life for however long she has left!

Thanks for the pics and stories.

I love the dogs I will pray everynite that they get a good home. I plan on opening me a no kill shelter soon. I have to check into it and see what it will cost me and how many grants I can get so I can keep them alive.

Bailey well actually there's bad news about Bailey, and my Addy, who's picture isn't there but she's a rottie mix. Bailey was taken to a vet yesterday and they think it's a large tumor... So she's going to see a specialist, but since she's in pain, and miserable we think she may be better off being put to sleep.
And my Addy, is food aggressive, and is terrified at the shelter from the other dogs attacking her all of the time. And she has a terrible knee problem that requires very expensive surgery, which will take a long time to heal, and she has arthritis so it will always be painful, so she will be put down on wednesday. So... I'm just buying her steak and chicken everyday until then, and spoiling her rotten. It's been a horrid week for me. Two of my favorites in a row, and one of my coworkers died. Terrible week... -_-

I'm so sorry to hear all your bad news, JackDemp. It sounds like you're in for a tough week. I know you'll get through it just fine and you keep Bailey and Addy's memories with you forever. Try to take care of yourself as well this week!
