Si's Fishless Cycle

Good comment kaiv, totally agree, give it a little shake after each drop! I do that but forgot to think of it or mention it! Its the -change- you are about, any change, not the color, but the change usually happens significantly on a particular drop (sometimes not until you shake it!) and that's the degree number you want to log, is my take on it.

~~waterdrop~~

Make sure with each drop added you give the vial a good shake to see if the colour changes, it shouldn't be keep still whilst adding drops one after the other, you need to spread the concentration of the chemicals throughout the water as the rating is based on testing a full 5ml or whatever for your tests.

Saying that I am sure you do this anyway, as it will be clearly stated in the instructions :)

Also just to re-iterate you are looking for the transition from one colour to another, not the colour matching a card...orange to green shouldn't be too tricky to see happen, they are contrasting colours

I'm off to get my 4 x Tapajos shortly as well as some new plants probably...I have just moved some old media (used since I first started the hobby in October) and 4 peppered cory from the main tank into the 125L one, fingers crossed there is no mini-cycle...I'll be testing it everyday until I am comfortable that the bacteria is doing it's bit. If I have to I will be doing twice-daily water changes to get over any bacteria issues and I'll just move the tapajos into the main tank and hope there is no ich issues etc. Should be okay but as this is the first time I've done this I am a little weary :)

Cheers

the problem is its more of a gradient change rather than a sudden one. I was sceptical too thats why I posted it  I don't shake it, I do that twisting thing whatever they call it  several times...

Sounds exciting :fun: Hope all goes smoothly for you!

New fish are in the quarantine tank, but it didn't go all that smoothly :( I am a bit concerned as 1 of the 4 Cory I put into the tank when I set it up this morning is now showing problems with buoyancy...

I'm posting this into the fish emergency section now too...link: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/328611-new-tank-old-media-cory-buoyancy-problem-after-move/

Thats unfortunate, I hope it sorts itself out soon! Pics of your new fish soon I hope :)

Yep for sure, they're more like 1.5-2" long rather than 1" - big eyes in comparison though :)

They'll be in the "new" old tank for about one week to make sure all is okay...although if I see any reason to move them out because of what is happening with the cory I will do...

Who ever thought fish can be so stressful! They should be relaxing!!!!

They're probably just a little stressed, they'll all be relaxing soon enough :D

I can't wait to be able to put some fish in my tank  This nitrite spike is huge! I'm curious to see what colour it'll be later, its never been such a weirder colour than last nights so its leading me to believe the spike is still on its way up...!

I guess as long as there's change good things are happening...

I am seriously worried about a mini-cycle, I think I'm gonna do another water test and potentially move my new fish and do a water change at about midnight before I go to bed...first time I have transferred media to a "new" tank to have it pre-cycled...scary stuff for me. It's that worry versus putting new fish straight into the main tank and risking infection...

I forgot to mention, I also got a female HRP (possibly HRPxBlue Convict) who is in qt too, she'll either stay put and be joined by the male in about a week or go into the main tank too...

How come you had enough media to move around without one of the tanks not having enough?

You can only do the best thing to do, i'm sure it'll work out well anyway :good: Sounds good about the extra fish too :p

My 2 external filters are huge and have lots of media, and when I seeded the first one 3 months ago I used my pads from the Fluval filter you get with the Roma 125 (U2?). Well now I took those pads back out and put them back into the Fluval filter for it to use them again...I am sure they had tons of bacteria in them...

The main tank has zero ammonia as I tested that along side the qt this evening, so all is fine there. I wouldn't be slightly tempted to only run the newest filter yet though, I figure it needs to be running for a couple of months before I can assume it has ample bacteria in it.

The female HRP keeps coming right up to my end of the quarantine tank and staring at me whilst I'm on the computer...I keep having this feeling something is watching me

the tank is about 1 ft from my seat

Should be good if breeding commences, I can watch whilst sort of working...

It was a u2 with the old one, they've recently updated it to U3 :) Sounds reliable anyway

I like to think the fish can see you. I think in certain tanks the reflection messed things up a bit? If i look through the front of my tank from the side, you can't see out. I'll have to put my head in the tank to see what it looks like

Would be awesome being there. Thats why I like having mine in my room because its also where I work, and where I relax so lots of time to watch them :)

edit: I remember reading something a while back about fish constipation or something lol...made them get trapped air so they floated up to the top? not sure.

I best you have t5 tubes too right?

cory issue: I guess it could just be a coincidence along side the move...they had peas 2 days ago though which normally helps with that sort of thing...

I have 2 20W T8 bulbs. The bigger tanks have T5's with a bigger wattage.

Hmm..not sure!

Got the same tubes as me then, just checked and I have a Fluval U3 too...snap :) To be honest though the power of those tubes is more than enough

For info, apparently cory (and other catfish) get gas easily, and I bet he gulped too much air on the move in the net...seems okay now ...phew...
did you watch the youtube vid I posted in the emergency section, kinda funny behaviour really

Yeah I saw the vid. Made them look really unusual the way they were floating! Glad they're back to normal anyway haha you were a bit worried then!

Yeah the tubes seem good, they're two different colours too.

Gunna test the tank now

Ok so I tested GH again and its 6  The trick is to look down the test tube rather than across it like you do with the colour cards.

Still adding 3ppm of ammonia everyday. Nitrites still off the chart. They must be like... 15ppm now lol

I might try diluting it if i can be bothered tomorrow
