Shop: Lfs Stocking Levels

Firstly sorry for putting this in this part of the forum but I couldn't see any suitable place for it and as I've posted all my other comments here...


Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a legal minimum tank size that Aquarium shop owners had to keep to.

I ask because I have been to some aquariums and some of the tank sizes or stocking levels are shocking. With Rays in tanks so small that the edges of the fins are vertical cos they are beyond the sides of the tank in all directions, cases where a large fish can barely turn around and Siamese Fighters kept in a Cooler water cup.

It's disgraceful!!! Are there any laws against this?

Im not sure if there are laws, but obviously there are standards which they should stick too. If your concerned about any shop, contact the local council who issue their license to sell livestock and get them to check the place out.

Was this UK with fighters in little cups? I didnt think that was allowed over here otherwise all the stores would try it, have never seen that myself and unsure if legal but probably worth looking into.

Yes, it was Pier Aquatics in Wigan. Has anyone else tried this store and found the same apalling conditions?

A good while ago when I knew nothing about fish my lfs sold me a tiny glass tank, it had 2 sections to it and I had a betta in each of them. each section only held 400ml of water, they had no filter or anything else. I was told they would be fine like this and that in their home country they are usually kept in jam jars.
They didnt live very long.

I learnt my lesson and wouldnt trust them for anything.

My local Maidenhead Aquatics used to be good and kept their fighters in the normal tanks. The water current might have been a bit high for them but it was still much better then what they have recently done, which is to put them into these tiny tanks, which stand side by side and are 400ml max. Unfortunately these things seem to be becoming the standard thing at shops

They might be able to survive but that's all they do, and just barely. A man could survive in a coffin sized box but we don't even put prisoners in those, so why should we do it to fish?

For Wigan council, pet shop licensing comes under Business and Regeneration. Every council has different structuring, and it can be a nightmare trying to find the right section.
