Shocked By Forum Rules

I personally think it is a pretty pointless rule too to be honest. My main priority as a fishkeeper is the healthy homing of every single captive kept (and non-captive) fish out there and at times a gesture in a different direction may be needed to obtain information paramount to that.

Personally I think that if a forum has adequate advertisement and is full of top notch info which surpasses quality and quantity of other competitive sites out there they shouldn't have a problem. This is definitely the case with TFF, type in "fish forum" on google and it's the first site up, couple that with the amount of members who refer people here (myself included) and this forum would be gaining members faster than it loses them - the boost to the member and posts count in the last year or so is testimony to that. The amount of good info contained here also puts it into a leading contention against other sites. Both of these points go a long way towards finding members as well as keep them coming back. I frequent plenty of forums on an every so often basis but continue to come here more regularly then the others combined and am sure a good number of our most active members are exactly the same.

At the end of the day though it is the admin's perogative as to what constitutes the forum's collective rules and no amount of bitching about them (rules and/or admins  ) will change that. The most I can recommend is to perhaps do as I do and private message the person in question with a relevant link to the particular information needed if it isn't contained within easy reach on here and hold fast in the knowledge that you have at least helped one person with a problem. Sure, a forum is meant to be a tool to exchange ideas and information to the masses, but when rules are restricting then one person helped is better than none IMO.

I think we've missed the point completely; those using the site do so as guests of the site owner, and agree to abide by the rules before posting. We may not agree with them, but we are nevertheless bound by them. The site offers a wealth of free information easily available, and I think the least we can do in return is to follow the guidelines for posting.

In my Honest opinion,
I think it is a bad idea in it's self to Not allow any links to other sites,
and be so stricked on the rule.
Just a friendly link, not pushing it like shoe salesman though.
It's more or less saying, that this forum is the only one your info is any good or correct from.

I was in an oscar site that was bad about this,
they would come right out and say "if the info isn;t from this site, that person don;t know anything they are talking about"

To me it's just silly to be that way, fishkeepers 90% of the time all get along no matter what site they are from, the more people you can have between diff forums the better the info is going to be for both,
and the more new people you can meet and learn from or teach something new.
But like was mentioned before,
With the number of members here and number of posts made, I realy think You got it going on here and surely have nothing to be afraid of from a new forum or other forums,

Saying forums are competing with each other, to me, that is just wrong.....forums are not about money
or how many members or page hits, it;s about, fish, fun, friendships :good:

Very well said; I agree completely.

If you want a second opinion, it's hardly difficult to ask Google yourself instead of annoying every one else by asking for any other good forums, or vice versa. Although why you'd want a second opinion I'm not sure.

I don't know of a large fish forum that allows members to link to other forums that cover the same material.

I'm not sure now, but for years in SW we linked to reefcentral and nanoreefs without a problem.

''I reseve all right to say what the hell I like to who I like, and there's nothing you can do about it, so don't try.''

lol

This is precicely why we need to have rules for posting. A similar attitude by a member of a UK site a couple of years ago resulted in both the member and the forum owner being issued with court proceedings following the posting of an article which was less than complimentary about an aquatic business. The site owner was deemed to be equally responsible as the person who made the posting (tacit consent), and only a full and unconditional published apology averted substantial costs and damages against both.

Reef Central allows links over to Grim Reefers, though RC has made so much money for the owner I guess he doesn't mind another forum taking a part of a highly specialised area away (SW Preds).

this thread has been here for a while now and i just clicked on it now.
and realised that you were talking about my post which was edited by a mod.

i have also edited the post to include a note that the mod should have PMd me that he has edited my post or should have put his username for any query.

What is there to query if it's against the rules ? Or did you not know ?
