Yep this is fine, its a refractometer which is easier to read then a hydrometer

Looks fine. Some people don't like using sand with shells and stuff fin as they say you get debris building up in it. Its the right type (Aragonite)but the particle size is down to personal preference.

Salt

This will be fine. I used Instant ocean salt for over a year and its not too bad. I switch to red sea pro coral salt though as the mag and calc levels where better (not a big issue when you dont have a lot of corals).

I realise that everyone prefers the deltec skimmers and I can not find a used one and can not afford a new one.

There has got to be something comparable for less than $300.00.

Is it the Red Sea Prizm in particular or the entire Red Sea brand that you do not like?

Does anyone else use another brand other than deltec? They are not as common in the US as the UK it seems because finding them is like finding a specific needle in a pile of needles!!

Shelby, I use the sand with shells in and wouldn't use anything else - think it looks more natural

I thought the picture made it look very nice and the price is reasonable. I'm just curious though, do you have any sand sifting critters in your tank? Not that I know what any would be but I've read they do great things for your tank by keeping the sand mixed up and the like. Is there any truth to that?

I myself have no idea what type of stock I am going to try when the tank is set up except the requisite clowns  Seems like everyone starts with them but I've seen them in tanks before and I know they have tons of personality! I would like to get some type of star possibly. And just come up with ideas from there.

I have a sand sifting star and two conch - I used to have Nass vibex but my hawk ate them all, so am now relying on the star and two conches :good:

You do need something to sift the sand - there are a few fish that do it too, but they make too much mess for my liking  they blow sand everywhere

Haven't had one personally, but have read good things about them. I can't remember what protein skimmer I have -_- ????

The LFS said they rate the red sea skimmer, but maybe not a specific model - can't remember now, and Deltec. There was another, but I'll have to find out again what they suggested. Thought it was Ocean something...

Not thought about what one I'm getting yet, should really, but not sure on the stock yet, other than what you've mentioned :good:

I am currently stalled... waiting on the RO system to be installed. The Boss has decided he wants to put in a household system to use as drinking water also. It should be installed a week from tomorrow. The good news is we have a little more cash to play with because he is selling some wood working tools he can no longer see to use. Which basically means we can get things up and going a tad bit faster :good:

Well the Marine aquarium has been put on the back burner for now. Waiting to purchase all the equipment. We have decided to go freshwater for the time being as we have literally everything for that just have to start the cycle! Headed over to the cichlid forums.. lots to learn! lol

Thanks for all the help guys!
