Well have been thinking about getting 2 of these guys for a wee while and saw 2 in the LFS today that i just could not leave.

I felt so sorry for them as they were crammed in a tiny tiny tank and had been handed in from someone who had also kept them in a tiny tank.

I currently have them in a 3 and a half foot tank,i know this is not ideal but it is very over filtered and alot bigger than they have been in up till now, they will however have a bigger new home in the next few weeks once i have done a bit of moving stuff around to fit another tank in.

When i first put them in thier new home they had a look around and about 30 mins later they were both at the bottom of the tank almost lying down,i was really worried, but i went and picked the kids up from school and when i got back they were swimming around happily :hyper: I have noticed they go and hide if anyone goes upto the tank for too long,i'm hoping this is just them being shy until they settle in.
I have never kept oscars before (have done alot of reading though) so any advice on them would be great, especially the best foods for them etc.

Heres a photo i managed to get of them earlier

awwwwwwww  they are absolutley gorgeous!

im so pleased for you, got the shock of my life when i saw the title and just knew there was going to be an oscar involved
they look lovely and healthy,if a bit mistified for the moment lol, they`ll soon be on top form wagging and begging like puppies

laying on the floor is very normal when they first get home, they soon come around as you see, expect more of the same during/after a water change, you may find that they have a "lay down" between busy periods anyway..Bo does, and hes the first ive ever had that does it, but make sure its nothing to do with water quailty just to be on the safe side :) you will soon pic up on there individual habits and personalities

i have always fed mine on Tetra Doromin cichlid sticks, i feed these about 3 times a day- dont over feed( she says) i give Bo about 8 stick each time for that size i would think about 4 each would be fine about 3 times a day, then i feed froze, defrosted prawns cut in half, cooked cooled n sqished peas about once a week, also meal worms, and the odd bit of cod.. make sure you remove any food that they have lost interest in as it just grotties the water and with messy fish like oscars its just something you can do without.

i have taken the liberty of reserving you membership no35 in the oscar club, where you can ask for and offer advice, post pics of your babies, and generally share your experiences of them, which of course i hope will be very happy ones all the way :)
heres a link if you havent already been in there

It's ok the scooby was here before he was lol, although he is getting a tad worried because he hasn't moved into mine full time yet and he is begining to wonder if there will be space for him to stay over atall soon, even the kids are starting to panic incase thier rooms become places to put more fish LOL

Shelagh they don't seem to be eating yet,is this just a normal part of the settling in period do you know?

Otherwise they seem happy although they do go into hiding when anyone spends too long near thier tank.

The more I read about Oscars, the more interested Im becoming!!!

As gorgeous as they are, I might stick with the Tiger Barbs for now until Im a bit more than a beginner!
