Why is his reading returning to what he should be wanting to see after 5-10 minutes though?

Anyway; here's a thread where it was discussed and someone emailed API about it; nitrite tests

Right I have done the massive water change 90% and checked the readings this morning for nitrite, when I put the drops in to the sample water they are blue(duck egg blue) then after 5 mins purple about 2.00ppm Nitrite, thanks for all your help I got a little confused with all that.

Did you give the test tube a good shake after adding the 5 drops? You want a turquoise/ egg blue colour, anything else and it is big water change time.

I forgot to say I am doing a fishless cycle....
