Hey guys, i am quite new to the whole fish thing, and want to know, are there any fish that do not need to be fed. As in, do they eat algae, or roots of plants?

I would also appreciate a list of low maintenance fish, where you feed them minimally, or do not require water changes, etc.

Thanks B)

if thats the way u r thinking then maybe fishkeeping really isnt for u  , water changes on a weekly / bi weekly is a neccesary as is feeding , hmmmm

No, its not a "cop out", its for a product i am trying to create to sell. And there is an issue for the amount of time that it is in the store. Preferably, i would like the shop owner not to have to clean and feed it, etc, at least i would like to minimise it.

Just to add, i heard of an example where Siamese Fighter Fish can survive by feeding off plant roots. This could be an alternative. Have you heard of this?

This could work. The only reason i know this is because at Wal*Mart **grumbles** they sell these kit things where you put a plant in the vase and just put water in and no soil or dirt, letting the roots justhang around in there. Then you put a Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) in and it'll swim around it. I'm assumeing it eats the roots because i dont see how you could put food in around the plant.

My social studies teacher had one on her desk for a little while before it died :byebye: . This may work for you however i don't know how nice this is on the fish. The one Mrs. Berry had looked miserable because it had no where to swim more move around.

Dunno how accurate I am on this, I'm not sure if this whole thing is a kit or you have to put it all together yourself. I have seen it before though where the fish is under the plant so I'm assuming it eats the roots. :dunno:

Bettas CAN NOT survive off roots. They are meat eaters(carnivorous). Also, the lilies they suggest you use are also more suited to soil and not water. So...please don't buy the plant/betta setup thinking that the fish will eat the roots. Also, bettas in bowls/vases do require alot of water changes. They are not low maintenance. They need to be fed and have their water changed in order for them to be happy and thrive. Hope this information helps. :D :D

Oh lord, help us all. :p

Just about ANY animal you decide to keep is gonna be "hard" on you. There are NO low matienance animals. :p

It takes a whole heck of alot of time and experiance to get an aquarium to ALMOST run by itself. All fish, all LIFE need food and a proper enviroment. Without these, life will cease to exsist. Period.

Gut, may I suggest a pond? Set one up in your yard- allow algae to grow and toss some snails in. :p
In order to keep animals- you NEED to make some time for them. They are not play pretties to be set aside and forgotten.

Betta do not eat plant roots. They eat mostly insects. They will nibble the roots when they are starving. :p Then they die.

what your doings just stupid, fish are animal, animals need food and attention, you could put them in a small container with a plant, if you wanted to sell a dead fish, but if you want a live fish, your either going to have to invest more money, or try exploit something else

honestly... its a stupid idea if u ask me...

not to be rude or anything

but this forum is for fish lovers

not for ppl that dont care about fish and are lazy

treating bettas like that is horrible

i bought one from a cup 4 days ago and hes now in a 10 gallon with a female and he can only swim to the top 4-5 times a day as he was so messed up from living in a cup... and eating roots... my gosh... LAZY... if ur too lazy to drop a flake into a fishs bowl once a day, and your too lazy to clean it once a week... dont bother coming here and posting ur ''genious ideas'' about how to be lazy and still keep fish

once again just my 2 cents
:S not tryin to be a jerk but sometimes it happens

:(sorry

All fish require maintenance and what I would say would probably just be what others have already said. Even the very low maintenance hardy species require a lot of maintenance.

I think he's trying to do one of these companies that you hire out aquariums to companies and they pay 'rent' for it. The people who supplied the tank come round and clean it etc.. But if you don't have any fishy knowledge then doing this sought of thing straight out is going to be impossible :/

Ive read about tubifex worms or maybe tubiflex worms (not sure) on this forum that reproduce in the substrate, don't know if that could completely feed the fish but you might want to look into it

Simply put,

are there any fish that do not need to be fed?

No.
Well, you could set up a beautiful tank with silk plants and take plastic fish, tie them to a piece of fishing line, tie a small weight to the bottom....and you will have a fully functional tank with no feeding, and no cleaning....well you may want to dust the top off every now and then. :D
