Sam's Now To Be High Light And Tech 20g

What are dwarf sags?

Just read through and couldn't work it out, Googled it and nothing really came up.

Sounds like a good tank plan Sam

Sags means plants in the Sagittaria family. Its just easier to write sags than Sagittaria each time! Two tropica ones are Sagittaria platyphylla and Sagittaria subulata.

Hopefully it'll be ok once its up and running, but then again thats what I thought about my nano and the aquascaping in that is shocking to say the least! Heres hoping though!

Sam

I hope so! They wont do as well as in an EI tank and probably not produce as many runners/plantlets but they'll give me a decent ground cover and at a sensible height.

Sam

Until Richard at aquaessentials gets his plants up and running I'll get mine from Greenline, they have a good service and are relatively cheap.

If you're looking for plants, the collections greenline do are supposed to be great value and the quality of the plants is great too. You don't necessarily know what you're getting but for around 10quid you get 60-70 plants, so its a good way of starting with plants and also finding out what plants will grow in your tank :)

Sam

That sounds like a nice tank plan, Sam. I know I'm putting Anubia gracilis in my 20g. The leaves are unusual, like a triangle, so it should be an interesting specimen plant in my 20g. They also have varigated Anubia barterii, for a contrasting leaf shape and color. Mosses will look good too. I'm also getting a Bolbitis heudelotii, just for fun. :) I have 2.8WPG in my 20g, but it's a 20g high, so it's a bit tall.

Have you thought about fish yet?

Unfortuantely (but fortunately for my bank account!) Im keeping the fish that are already in there, as this is a straight swap from a 'fish' to 'plant' tank, so all the fish in my sig will be going back in. Its really why Im not doing EI either, the NO3 and PO4 will be all over the place so cant control them. Thought the fish would appreciate the extra plant grow, although the swords in there at the moment are about 8" tall so they are doing better now than they every have! Most hold onto them, not sure yet.

Will have a look for those species you suggested,

Thanks Llj :)

Right all,

I finally got around to re-doing my main tank. This gave me an opportunity to change the actual tank over as the old one was looking very tired and the seals were not in a good way when I took it apart ready for the tip, so glad I did it while I had the opportunity!

Right as to what I've done, I think I’ll let the pictures do the talking as there are lots. I am hoping to change all but the anubias for dwarf sags, to give it that grassy look, and the small piece of bogwood on the right will go as well, but the clowns like being under there so though I would keep it until they are settled.

Here goes………

A before picture so you know what a disgrace it is (I will post this again at the end so you can see the difference without all the scrolling!)

Now all the stuff to go with it!
mainstuff19pm.jpg

And the new tank, the piece of wood to the right will go under it as the top of the stand has warped a bit, doh!

The new CO2 system. Cost me around £85 quid all in so a complete bargain and it’ll last me years! Cylinder from ebay for £10 and refill at a welding shop for £28.

And the reg, which I also got from ebay, through a German seller. Excellent reg too, easy adjustment of the bubble rate and cheap at abut £45 including deliver.

And the wood that’s going to be the focus, most of you will have seen this before but for those that haven’t :)

The cat wanted to get involved and spent most of the day watching the fun! I’m mid strip at this point, water and stuff everywhere. Literate and gravel all washed and mixed. Old tank replaced with the new one, with the wood and foam underneath.

Here’s the new tank on the stand. Its not ADA but you can hardly see the brace so decided to leave the top black boarder off as I think it looks better :D

In goes the black gravel and laterite
mainlaterite8yi.jpg

And the eco-complete over the top
mainecocomplete5pj.jpg

Now the wood so I can see how it’ll look, after which I took it out and attached the anubias, then put the wood, water and fish back in.

And here it is, the final layout :yahoo: the bigest difference is the colours, the black of the EC really helps and the anubias are really green. Fish seem to like it too, swim much nearer the surface now. The only down side was that I lost 3 of the x-ray tetras, I should have added a small filter to the bucket to increase surface water movement as I think they ran out of oxygen, but the others were fine and were swimming about quite happily within a few minutes.

And as promised the before shot again :)

Comments welcome, once the dwarf sags are in and the other stuff removed I hope it’ll look much ‘cleaner’ but you get the idea for the time being :)

Sam

Looking great Sam!! I think it might look better if the sword on the left is relocated to go behind the wood (or removed totally). That will leave the front totally clear for the grass.

Yeh the swords will be going completely (as will the ech on the right) once Ive got the sags through. Have just ordered them from greenline so should be here this week. Will update once they are planted :)

Thanks Dubby :)

Sam

Looks good Sam :good: Its been worth the wait. Might give the black gravel a go in my tank the plants stand out much better. :) Keep us updated.

A good start, I think it will look much better once the grass is in. The large Anubias just left of centre on the wood looks a bit "dominating" to me, but thats just a first impression. As with all new tanks, it's a case of how it looks once it all fills in I guess!

Well done,

Rob.

Thanks Rob, maybe I should use all nana anubias? thought the variation would help though?
