Rummy Nose Tetras

i could throw the sofa out and have a 6ft tank

not sure the kids n hubby would appriciate that though...ive got a tank in the kitchen(25lts) was going to be a betta tank but now houses a rescued goldie!!

and i have the "main" tank in the living room 75L..well its a 80L but only holds 75L after the deco and gravel....

Any of the 'rules' you hear quotes (e.g. one inch per gallon) general take into account decor, substrate etc so even though you have a 80l tank with 75l water it's probably ok to go with '80l' tank in terms of stocking etc.

oooo really?

as it goes is there any truth in the 1 inch per gallon? ive read a few different things
also, say i was fully stocked...then added more fish....how would i know i was over stocked...i mean i know the filter wouldnt be able manage the bioload from the fish...so what would happen,, ammoinia levels? fish death? cloudy water?

The ammonia would go up because fish poop=ammonia.
The ammonia does affect the fish by causing diseases and for them to become ill.

The 1 inch per gallon rule is extremely inacurate because it depends what fish you have. Some create more mess than others.
For example cherry shrimp take up very little stocking space because they eat the algae and left over food sometimes and
dont create a lot of mess as they eat the mess.

Bear in mind the full 1" per gallon rule which is 1" per gallon for fish that grow to no more than 3". So for example you couldn't have an Oscar in a 20 gallon tank. Also, it works the other way - you could probably get away with a few khuli loaches in a smaller tank than the rule would dictate as their bio load is very small and they ferret around in the substrate (sand of course!).

It is, at best, a guide, and needs to be used (and advised on) with caution. There are so many other factors - filtration, water changes, feeding regime and the dimensions of a tank (for example a weird 20 gal tank tank that was tall and square would fall foul).

It is easy to quote it to people who are new to the hobby but much harder to implement properly in practice and can still lead to inappropriate stocking.
