Rorie's Fish House Project

Thinking of all the physical work you have put into this is making me tired.

Can't wait to see the tanks stocked.

Awesome job mate im well impressed. Im in the process of turning my garage into a fishroom. No where near as much work as you've put in mainly because my D.I.Y. skills are non existant lol. Whats the make of the racking and where'd ya get it from???

Tiz a fine attempt, but i cant help think that the games room came first and the fish room second...I cant imagine viewing those tanks is all that easy as the space doesn't really allow you to sit back and enjoy them?

i was thinking the same thing. there is no room for a sofa or anything.

unless the room is going to be used for breeding to make money?

I dont think the aim here has been a display setup though, but a functional one to induldge in his hobby. Reptile keepers often work in a similar manner with the majority of housing being functional: rack sysem of plastic tubs with heat strips, lights etc. and maybe only 1 or 2 display vivariums in their living room or whatever.

Edit: might also be like me: i enjoy my aquatics mainly due to the science of keeping the ecosystem balanced and trying to do that as naturally as possible. No seat required.

Its from a company called Big Dug. I spent some time finding whats best suited as its all different prices for stuff that looked the same to be haha. Just hoping it all lasts! Its more expensive than making it i think, but given the amoutn of work i put into the fish room as it was, i wanted to just buy there! Also, they are a lot easier to chaange than after having constructed wooden framing.

Well, the fish room came first to be honest! The size is for the heating – if its too big, it will cost a lot more to heat. I made it as small as possible….well, maybe a better way of putting it is that I was as efficient with the space as possible (the size of the tanks etc were to fit perfectly). The space I have is plenty for working in there. You will see when I make the video how well organised the space is. Everything JUST fits haha. RE the viewing of the fish – I agree, its not gonna happen! But I saw this as a fish breeding room. I really enjoyed breeding the fish so that’s what this is for. Given some fish such as the Killies breed best when you do nothing to the tank, it can be REALLY dirty. So looking at a green tank with just enough cleaned to see the fry wouldn’t be too appealing anyway.
I do, however, still have my 54” tank in the garage, so after I sort the games room, maybe there will be room in there for a pretty tank haha.

Great looking project! Quite the undertaking that I'm sure a lot of people on this forum would love to have, including ME!! Thanks for sharing. Hope to see the video soon.

Guys, if you had read well you would know that he will be placing several discus breeder cubes in there. Now I have never bred discus but I understand that they don't like too much movement around them when spawning. Plus Rorie also has a display tank in another part of the house.

ive read the whole thread. i think what me and tizer are getting at is. if we had all them tanks we would like enough room around them to look and enjoy the tanks. thats all :)

Exactly! When you read through these long fish room creation threads, of which there are a lot of (not on this forum mind) you tend to expect the focus to be on the fish room and for it to have an exciting ending. For me, it started well, i was looking forward to seeing the results of his hard graft. But, ultimately, its just another cramped little room with some fish tanks in it :) Don't take it the wrong way, i'm not dissing Rorie or his efforts/plans, far from it, its what HE wants after all. I was just hoping for something more/different, but although i'll keep an eye on his updates and breeding efforts admittedly I've lost interest in the "room" hes working on. There are other builds going on in the world that i would rather keep an eye on as they are closer to the ideal fish room i would like to create one day.... :) What u do find intersting are all the makes and models of the things he is using, the pumps and filters etc. :good:

Well, interesting comments. But yes, this is a breeding project. Not for the money, but for the fun of breeding. I find it much more satifying wathching the fish breed, raise their fry etc etc. I have had an amazing 90L plated tank which was low tech. I have also had a 52" long tank which was high tech, pressurised CO2 etc etc. This was what i enjoyed the most, so this is what i want to focus on. There is no real way of making this pretty - with all the pipes, the cost of nice looking tanks etc etc etc, so there would be no point in putting a sofa in there. I wouldnt want to look at is! I am a photographer on the side, i like to look at my photos from all around the world rather than metal racking and plastic pipes. haha. If i decide to set up my 52" tank again, then that will add to the 'nice things to look at'.

I made a video last night but it 15mins long! I even bored myself haha. So gonna make a new one tonight and see how we get on :)

lol, I'm bad about making my videos too long :p Just use what you've got and start chopping bits out - I'm sure you've got plenty to show us though!

Rory, I only just saw this, and feel slightly ashamed about that, as it is epic. Thank you so very much for sharing all the details. Please keep it going and share both the good and bad, as I am planning on opening a small fish shop next year for my girlfriend to run. So tank set-up and filtration will need to be very similar to what you are doing, and I will really value you sharing the lessons here.

Good work fella

Ohh, I've scanned through here. I actually like the size of the fish room. As long as you have some display tanks to enjoy elsewhere, that looks very functional.

I could see building a small room like that in a basement for breeding. I used to have a whole apartment that size when I lived in NYC, soooooo :good:

I'll be happy to see what you do with it.

BOOOOOO!

I got home to find my 3 foot tank cracked and TOTALLY empty! The ground is flooded, insulation soaked, its wicked its way up my 6 inch floor joists and soaked the floor boards of the games room! This is why we do these games outside where it doesn't really matter. I'm just annoyed that my perfectly sized tank is a write off! Cracked from corner to corner.

THis delays me as i'm now not sure what to do! Either way i'll need to buy a new tank. Sigh!

Video tour is uploading BTW! It'll be 113mins before its done though!!
