Basically I was wondering if anyone knew if RO waste water could be safely used for African type hard water cichlids. Im not enitrely sure how an RO works but I have a rough idea. The waste water: Is it free from Chlorine and other contaminants apart from the obvious hardening agents in the water.

Second question. If the answer is Yes to my first question, then surely i could use a small portion of RO waste water along with the pure water. say 90% pure ro water with 10% waste water in my discus tanks to add trace elements back to the water? Is this a good idea, it seems so. Or am I missing something?

PS (Forgot to ask this also, does the waste water contain any heavy metals or are they also removed?)

You can use the waste RO water in the garden, it's got much higer mineral concentration than normal tap water, so should really help the plants. Don't use it for washing the car or the windows, as the higher mineral content will cause streaks!!!

depends on the ratio of the RO unit ;)

Ours is 7:1....
We use the 'waste' in our other tropical tanks with no problems,
its not a lot different tap water.

if youve got 400ppm TDS going in, 0 coming out of the RO the 400 will be devided across the 7 'waste'

8x400 = 3200.. devided across the other 7 units would leave about 460ppm in the waste
