I am doing a bit of research on oscars. I am looking for reasons why people buy an oscar and also what reasons they are put up for sale or re-homed. Thanks in advance

Well I bought mine simply because I like them, the way they look, their personality, the way they interact with their owner, that fact their like dogs in water.
Mine sits in my hand when I put it in the water and lets me stroke it like a cat.
The most common reason why they are put up for sale is because people have bought them and were unaware of their potential size and probably because they started eating smaller tank mates.

People purchase them because they are very cheap and have strong, beautiful colours when juiveniles. Untill they get bigger and bigger and people simply dont have the room to house them is when they get rehomed

I bought mine because i'd always had an 'urge' and that urge turned into an action when the world was introduced to a wonderfull chap called 'Chops'. With whom i'm very sure your familiar with

That and the fact they are beautifull fish, with vivid colouration and equally vivid personalities to match. Then as mentioned, unfortunately alot of the people who buy them simply havn't a clue how to care for them and give them away when they become to big and/or boistrous.

How the devil are you Lesley, was going to contact you the other yesterday, had a question i knew you would have the answer for. But thats a separate story.

Mind me asking what the research is for, or is it a secret

It sadly does appear the major factor is lack of researching the potential size of them . Chops is still as bad as ever, #29### bit me again today, good job he cant get his mouth fully open lol. Question wasn't a biggy. I knew you had an APS filter, i recall you trying to convince me to get one shortly after you did. Well i was going to ask your continued opinion of it, well, i went and bought the 1400LPH one today anyway.

I'm going to stop here, and transfer over to email and continue this conversation now....

I don't have one, but oscars, commom plecos, and bala sharks are like standard fish always available in the big box stores. There is no information on them so everyone buys one or five, regardless of the size of the tank. Then I think that oscars and common plecos are pretty hardy so survive and then some (very few if you think about it) are rehomed. I think bala sharks are more sensitive and probably die of stress, glass banging, or jumping out of tanks so you don't see them rehomed as often. I also think many of these three, the vast majority, as well as other species (green terrors come to mind) die or are euthanized.

Sad. Big box stores should not be this lame.
