Rescued Fish Rotting?

hi guys I rescued a silver dollar from mum mums tank, his fins are almost all gone and his nose looks like it has disintegrated and rotted all the way back to the bone??

he was struggling to get any food in a tank with a huge plec and a big Oscar plus some smaller (large) fish.

I have some pics, please can anyone diagnose?

Can he still maintain balance or is he struggling?

Is there any cotton wool patches on the mouth area, head area. Or cotton strands?

Sorry to hear that, but good on you for trying to rescue him. I don't think we'll be able to get a proper idea without photos, but it does sound like he's in a pretty awful way. If that's the case it would probably be kindest to euthanise him, especially if the damage to his face is that extensive.

It's a really tough one to call- I would try to give him a chance at life, but it's a really fine balance between whether it's cruel to keep him going or not. Wilder is fantastic at this stuff, hopefully she will be able to give you a more clear idea of what is best to do.

But in the mean time, could you tell us what his behaviour is like? Is he active, trying to eat, etc.? More info might help us give you better advice on whether there's a shot of him recovering or not. If you can isolate him and feed him on his own there might be a chance he could pull through.

If you do choose to give him a chance, daily water changes will help a lot, as will making sure he's in a calm environment. Soak his foods in garlic or vitazin (by waterlife), which will boost his immune system, not sure what medication to use.

If he can still swim I give him a chance.
Also if he still eating.

There a medication called furanol 2 by JBL, but I would only advise using the medication in isolation due to the med wiping
the good bacteria out in your filter.

I have him in tank in isolation bar a plec that I just can't catch!!!

he is swimming fine, he is nowhere near as skittish as he used to be though, he used to swim away from you if you even looked at him, I practically hand fed hints last nigh!!

he is also still trying to eat

You need to get treating with an internal bacteria medication.
