Rescue operation-poor little Puffer. (Cookie)

LOL paul! Hahah.

Is there any reason he is such a darker colour than martha? He is the same species right?

Yes, he's the same species as Martha.

We put the colour difference down to one or both of these factors:
  • Natural variation
  • The fact that his tank has black sand. Puffer fish are very adept at altering their colour to blend in, I suspect that when he's moved to a pale sand he'll become just like Martha.

wow, thanks sir minion, thats really interesting, so i guess ill wait and see what happens!

PS, sorry i thought u sold oddballs. I just thought u did. U have soo many! :*)

he looks fantastic!
any referance photos of him now to the AA battery? could interesting.

so with the tank freed up, what are you going to put in it? :dunno:
and have you ever thought of going back to the same LFS, to see how the other fahaka's are doing?

DD

i pay the LFS cookie and martha came from regular visit and since aorund May about 5 fahaka suddenyl wnt in a space of 2 weeks. then figure 8 and dwarfs went in there and had whitespot. on my last visit there were no puffers.

The last installment from me in the saga of 'Tough little Cookie, the Fahaka Pufferfish"

Today, as Paul has mentioned in the post above, Cookie moved from a tiny hospital tank in Suffolk, to a luxury condo in Essex.

The move was not without incident...

Cookie has been living in our tiny hospital tank since we rescued him from the jaws of death. There's not much room in there, but he called it home.

So when a pair of hands entered his tank with a large plastic bag attempting to scoop him up, he got upset and jumped for it.

That's right. Cookie jumped right out of the tank, a foot into the air the plopped onto the floor between the tank-stand and the wall.
On his back.

PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC

I knew I had to get him before he started puffing because quite apart from the fact that inhaling air can be fatal for puffers, if he inflated while in that small space he'd get wedged in and would die there.

My hands were already wet so I slid my hand into the gap between the stand and the wall where he'd fallen and grabbed a handfull of whatever part of him I could reach - his face- and pulled him out then dumped him straight back into the tank just as he started to puff.

The second he hit the water he deflated, expelling the small amount of air he'd sucked in and then sat there looking at me as if to say "Who? me?"

So we left him for a while for him (and us!) to de-stress. He seems no worse for wear for his ordeal so we tried again to CAREFULLY get him in the bag, this time putting the bag in the water the guiding him into it instead of trying to scoop him up.
Success.

Phew.

The journey to Paul's house was uneventful and the huge koi bag containing Cookie was placed in Cookie's new home to begin the long process of acclimatisation.

He looked so small in that big bag in that big tank.

After a long time of floating in the tank, and with Paul gradually adding tankwater to the bag, testing temperature & pH, Cookie was ready to go into his new home.

The bag is inverted and we wait, and wait. Cookie didn't want to leave the familiar safety of the bag...

Eventually, with a little coaxing Cookie comes out. Backwards.

A quick look around his new home..

Then it's time to find a comfy nook to sulk for a while.
