im redoing my tank soon and im wondering that if i remove one or both pieces of drift wood from the tank am i going to be removing valuable bacteria from the tank? i just lost my sword tail tonight and i don't want to loose anymore fish.

I am guessing it wont be a problem at all, since they say the nitrifying bacteria mainly colonize in the filter media.

as stated above removing it will have no or little effect on your bacteria colony

i don't know if driftwood holds more beneficial bacteria than a polyresin ornament or rock of equal surface area, but assuming it doesn't, removing the driftwood will have little effect on your ammonia/nitrite levels.
