hello,
i have two red and white fantails, one of which seems to have black areas appearing on him!!!
he is feeding well and seems fine in everyway other than his colour turning black on his tail, on his fin and towards the back of his body!!
is this normal or has any body got any ideas why.

can you get a pic?
Black can be a colour change but its a minute possibility. the main reason for black appearing is due to an ammonia burn and the black is healing tissue.
Has your tank gone through a mini cycle that you know of where the ammonia might have gone up a bit?
If you can check your water and tell us what you have for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and also size of tank, inhabitants, type, sizes and filtration.
Also, how often and how much in water changes and do you use a gravel vac?
How do you clean your filter out and how often?

the water stats are all o.k. at the moment, ive done a partial water change today as part of my weekly maintenance.
the two fantails live on their own in a 25ltr hex tank and seem to be really healthy at the moment except for one having some black colouring!!
a while back they had a bad case of white spot/velvet? and i thought i was going to loose them both but they both pulled through and as ive already said they are both really healthy looking.
i know people will say the tank is too small but at the moment they are only about 1" so they are fine as of now!

p.s. ill get some pics if i get my camera back :grr:

Myxobacteriosis

Symptoms: Symptoms may include black patches on the body and fins. The body may become bloated or swollen in some areas

This is a possible cause

just read up on Myxobacteriosis and hope its not that as it sound awful!!!
he may look a little less black today so i am going to continue with the water changes and wait and see how he does! other than the afore mentioned he really is a healthy fish with no other visable signs.
thanks for the response,
