Hello. I have a 55 gallon tank that contains two rainbow sharks and a Pleco. I have had them for about two years now and have never seen anything that looks like this in the tank before. Could it be rainbow shark eggs? I know that it is very difficult to breed them. Perhaps it is just a weird fungus ball? Thanks!

here is what it looks like:

That is the strangest thing I have ever seen... I wouldn't move it in the case that it could be eggs making you an extremely valued person (able to breed sharks). I've never seen fungus growth that huge, nor in that manner.

That is interesting. I would admit that the tank you have is too small for balasharks so it's quite strange for them to breed in a small tank.

Not a Balashark it's a pair of Rainbows?

Bala - Silver and around 14/15 inches max length.
Rainbow/Ruby - Red Tail Black Shark with all fins red instead of just the tail? Tendency to be more docile than Red Tails and grow to about 7 inches.

"Reports of hobbyist breeding Epalzeorhynchus Bicolor are very rare. A large well planted tank with a ratio of more females to males is needed. The females are more robust and rounded than the males. A spawning tube will appear weeks before spawning and the male fertilizes the eggs in jerky thrusting motions as the eggs are scattered. It is said that the eggs hatch in a couple of days and the fry are easy to raise. Most breeding is done in open ponds in their native Thailand and exported around the world."

Would indicate otherwise, but I'll carry on researching

"a gentman who lives near me has a 6ft tank and breeds
Rainbow sharks
black sharks
red tail sharks
SUCCESSFULLY

he uses a string mop head for them to lay little blue eggs in them (they get kinda glue to the strings)"

A post from a forum - indicating something completely different?

Is it just the sharks and one pleco? No other snails or other living things?

In the case that they are eggs, the plec could present an issue... I know that he most likely couldn't fit in that little cave but if you have in fact bred rainbow sharks, maybe better to be safe than sorry and move the plec if possible

Yes just the two rainbow sharks (not balas) and one Pleco in the tank, no snails or anything. Unfortunately when I woke up this morning it was gone. I'm guessing the Pleco somehow got to it. It was so strange because for awhile I kept thinking the albino rainbow shark was sick. It kept staying near the heater and would be vertically positioned. This lasted for a week or two. Then I noticed the weird thing (eggs?) in the tank and now the shark is acting like normal again!

Aww :( I think you could have successfully spawned rainbows :(

That doesn't look like eggs at all, sorry :/

To me it looks like a mass of something that is rotting, left over food or a dead fish that is covered in a layer of fungus and gas bubbles.

Glad someone else piped up and not just me :p
Similar maybe to that strange fungus you can get growing on the gravel and decor etc while cycling the tank.

From experience in a 10 gallon.. that looks like decay
