Eggs? What are these?

I really suspect it's snails, but the weird thing is I've had this tank setup for just over a year, and I haven't added any new snails or decor lately, and I've never had eggs like this before. It's weird, weird, weird, I tell you. @Back in the fold is right though. I love me a good mystery. I don't think they're frog eggs...but I really hope they are. Wouldn't that be a great Christmas present?

Every once in a while something appears and you scratch your head wondering where it came from . It’s usually something somewhat normal like ostrocod seed shrimp or cyclops or snails . Tubifex worms have been known to mysteriously appear . One member here reported that recently but the really mysterious mysteries are the ones that mysteriously appear in long established aquarium’s . Does stuff float in on the air ? Do eggs remain dormant in fish food and wait for the right conditions ? This happens more often than you think and it does make for some interesting amateur sleuthing .

Last night there were fewer; today only three are left. I don't think anything is eating them, as I haven't seen the fish pay them any mind. Perhaps they are snail eggs and they're just hatching and dropping into the water. ??? Perhaps I'll never know. I have often said that I like my tanks to have a little mystery to them...but it's going to bug me if these things just disappear without my ever figuring out what they are.

Welllp, one mystery solved.

I guess the question is... Is it laying the eggs or eating them ?

Definitely laying them. I’m one of those weirdos who likes pest snails. So no problem there. And this handsome fellow actually is fairly new. We caught in the frog pond last summer, and it came in from the badis tank when I tore it down a month or two ago. The badis depends on baby snails for its survival food. Nothing gets wasted in a walstad tank!
