Hi all. I'm not currently cycling a tank, but I have a cousin who needs to clean his tank bad and start from scratch again. I wanted to recommend fishless cycling to him so his fish wouldn't all die on him like the past two times. Unfortuantely, I have yet to find any pure ammonia. The LFS's I've gone to look at me like I'm nuts and the superstore's act like I'm smoking crack when I tell them that I need pure or clear ammonia with nothing else in it

Since I know this is a global board, I figured I'd also better specify that I need brands that are sold in the U.S.

I appreciate all the help. Thank you! :)

I finally found some at the pharmacy. Go and ask at the prescription counter they probably have it back there.
The stuff I was able to get is a 10% solution of ammonia.
Good Luck. ;)

I appreciate all the replies so far. Although, I will say that vagueness seems to the order of the day :p I will try the pharmacy the next time I'm near one, bt if anyone remembers a particular brand name, please let me know. Thank you :)

I looked everywhere for it with no success, everything was sudsy. Then I found an unopened bottle sitting on my garage shelf, Wal-mart brand "clear ammonia" I opened it and took a whiff to be sure it was free of perfumes & ,it is! I think I killed off several of my remaining brain cells by doing that though -_-

Yeah, I saw that stuff the other day, but I wasn't sure about it. I had completly forgotten that I wanted to ask about in in this forum until you mentioned it. I was unsure is it was okay because in the contents it listed it as having chelatin [something something something.
Of course, according to what I'm hearing from a new LFS in my area (who I'm taking with a LARGE grain of salt), using ammonia to cycle isn't nearly as good as a new(?) product from Marineland called Bio-Spira. Supposediy Bio-Spira comes in a liquid container and is stored in a refrigerater until needed. It contains active bacteria for both breaking down ammonia and nitrates. I've been meaning to start a thread asking for more info...

Oh and sorry to hear about your brain cells, Wuvmybetta. My condolences to their next of kin :p

    thanks, I TRY to take care of my remainders, but it's hard :p

yeah, chelatin, I dunno about all that, I used it anyway,we'll see how it goes -_-

I just use fish food, it may be slightly slower but id rather do it than buy ammonia.
