I bought a 6ft tank complete with filters a month or so ago, and within a week or so the Eheim Professional 2028 filter broke. It is primed, and on operation it just rattles really loudly and won't pump the water.
I have checked the propeller and this is intact, as is the shaft - but the previous owner mentioned something about ceramic rings- and that these often need replacing on the Eheim filters.
I have no idea what I'm looking for or where though - can anyone shed some light?

It seems to me that the propeller basically is what's rattling - so it's not being held securely in place, often after I've fiddled, it runs quietly for a few seconds and then starts rattling as if the propeller has been shaken off it's attachment to the pump or something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I would really like to get this filter up and running ASAP.

Dont think you got much to worry about here.

Firstly make suer their is no water in the pipes and the out let is above the water level.
Make sure it's turned off.
Connect the outlet to the filter and leave then intake off.
Get a syphon running on the intake and place the pipe on the filter intake.

Your now hear the filter filling.
Once full turn on andd away it should go.

If your still hearing a rattling noise then it's the impella.

I dont like the self primer on the 2026/2028's this is what i do and works every time, and it's also quicker.

Do you have the manual for the filter? Does the impeller have all the bits shown in the pictures? If you don't have the manual, it's here

Thank you guys, I have found a parts diagram for the filter online and it seems the shaft is missing a part and, as I thought, it's rattling around inside the housing and not doing it's job because of this.

I've ordered a new part, so fingers crossed this will fix my problems and my filter will be up and running soon :)

I've heard tell of a bodge job, where you can use a silicon bead to hold the shaft steady but I have to say I'm more than a little dubious about bodging such a good piece of kit, so I think I'll just deal with spending money (that I don't have .... LOL)

i had that on my eheim, the porcalain shaft had broke. its something like £3-5 delivered from ebay.

be careful fitting it as it can snap during fitting
