I have about 40 apple snails in my tank, there are young adult now. I had them from they are baby. They are always very active, no matter wot i feed them. How i change the water, they are very tough. Very rare i will have one died.

However, i moved house 3 weeks ago. After i set up the tank again, they become very inactive. I know the new water might be a little shock for them. However i done that many times b4. Basically, all of them hide in the corner, do not move. seldom eat anything. And graduallly died one by one. i tried to change water again and again. get clear mature water from another tank, no matter how i try, the snail just very inactive and dying. why?

when they died, the door of them is open, and no matter how i touch the inside of them, just do not move. every morning will 1 or 2 like this. There is no heater in my tank, maybe it is too cold for them? i notice at night some of them will come out to look for food. But compared to b4 in the old house, they are very inactive.

there is a betta living in the tank as well, nearly half year now, he is active as usual.

Pls help, any suggestion appreciated.

Have you added any new plants to the tank? Some plants are dipped in copper-based chemicals to rid of pest snails. If the plants are not rinsed extremely thoroughly, the residue can be highly poisonous to your apple snails.

Also, check for copper in your tap water as dizzied mentioned above.

so you guys think they might be poisioned by copper or sth? It is just so strange.

the two house are very close, just about 5 minutest away. so i doubt there is anything different in the water. Actually i have another tank, full of endlers and there are also three weak snail live there, these 3 guys has deformed shell, and weaker than others, so i left them in the endler tank. However, after this move, the 3 snails in the endler tank are still active.

i did not add anything to the snail tank, except the new water. Although that might shock them a little, but these guys should be tough, and i had done that many time b4 moving.

I notice they seems recover a little, and move to look for food at night, however there are still 1 died this morning. I just hope this nightmare end soon.

It's not necessarily in your water supply. Sometimes old copper pipes can release copper into your tap water. Take a tank water sample to your LFS and ask them to check for copper for you. Also, are you sure that your tank hasn't gone into a mini-cycle? Have you checked your ammonia and nitrite readings?

I do not have any test kit now, after keeping fish so many years, i always think i do not need those any more. Maybe i am wrong
no heater = dead snails
To be honest, i also suspect that. Although i do not always have heater on my tanks, but this house is definitely cold than the old one. so i think the snail might just hibernate? like tortoise doing ? because some of dead one look alright outside, just do not move, no matter how i touch it. I know dead snail normally stink. But those guys do not .

You can always take a sample to your LFS and ask them to check the stats for you.

What part of UK are you in? I used to keep apple snails in an unheated tank even over winter months without any problems and believe me, my house is not warm in winter days.

Anyway, hope your snails are recovering already. Do keep up with the water changes just in case it's ammonia and nitrite poisoning. Good luck :good:

I live in surrey, seems the warmest area in UK?

BTW, i got the heater today, and put it straight on. After a few hours, the snails do become more active, however, they still not keen about the veg i put inside the tank, you know they used to eat a lot. I put a dead snail inside, because they always eat dead ones. Let's wot will happen tomorrow.

Perhaps your new place's water source has traces of copper in it?

That would be my first guess. If you moved to an older house, it might still have copper pipes. Perhaps a dechlorinator that also removes heavy metals from the water might help?

No idea, heater installed, 2 snails died today. which are fine yesterday. when died, the door of them are open, no matter how i touch them, no response

If it is the water problem, my endler tank use same water, there are 3 weakest snails live there, but now they become the most active ones.

How often and how much have you been doing water changes in that tank? It is possible that your tank is going through a mini cycle due to the move. Have you tested the water for ammonia and nitrites at all?
