Plec ID

Could it stand for Large Panaque which is a cop out for "we really don't know what Panaque it is but its bigger than the ones we normally get" :)

which means?
I'm no expert on Panaque and did have a quick look to try to see if a lrg Panaque was listed anywhere but no information came back. I am however very aware that many LFS get a species they are unfamiliar with and rather than find out what they are they label them as a large this or that..(no offence was meant) ;)

Can you describe what the Panaque looked like?

it looked exactly like a royal plec. But people keep telling me they are ilegal in aus so its impossible that it is a royal. Its just a Panaque no lrg, thats just cos it was large

There are at least 6 members of the Panaque family sold as Royals, some don't even have L-numbers or scientific names yet. Some get bigger than others, but they all get pretty big.

If yours looks like a royal... then it is a royal, illiegalities regardless.

Most common Royals found in the hobby are:

L027
LDA63
L190

Then there's at least three unnamed others.

Each of these Royals is also found in a selection of naturally occuring colour & pattern variants.

Many fish are illegal for sale in Australia because they could survive in the wild and Australia has very delicate native wildlife that would be out-competed by the newcomers. Same goes for other places like New Zealand & Madagascar.

This has also happened in other places around the world. In Britain for example, the American Grey Squirrel has driven our native Red Squirrel to the point of extinction by out-competing it for food & habitat.
