my nan and grandad bought me a goldfish for my 13th birthday he has lived with them ever since and is now 10 they are moving to another country so now i have the goldfish his huuuuuge
here is the list of whats wrong with him

he has what looks like an orange lump on one of his eyes grandad said his had it years but i would still like to know if theres anything i can do

his tail looks like it has red veins like blood that seem to be getting redder by the day this is only his second day with me

i think he cut himself on the first night and has a 2 inch line of blood on his side (which tells you just how big he is i am gonna say his maybe 35cm long including tail))

thanks in advance for any help

Hi petalpoppy

we will probably need a little more info in order to give the best diagnosis

Did you or your grandparents ever test the water in the tank at all?
Also what size tank do you have, is it filtered and lastly how often have water changes been done in the past?

How was it transported from your grandparents to yours? i.e. is it in the same tank with the same untouched/cleaned out filter etc..

can you post any pics of the injury/illnesses?

hi i dont think they tested the water but my dad lived with them up until a few months ago and he is a big fish person he had marine tanks and stuff so im assuming that he maybe did it for them

the tank is 50 gallon it is filtered with a fluval 4 and he (grandad) said he did 1/3 water change every 3 weeks

i cant post pics at the mo because my comp that i can post pics with is being repaired but i will look through the internet and see if i can find pics that look like it
thank you for replying

Does your dad have a test kit that you could borrow to test the water?

From the symptoms of raised veins/blood streaks I am going to assume it is down to water quality problems, obviously a water test could confirm if this is the case.
Either way I would do a precautionary 50% water change, which, if nothing else, will help in healing the cut.

You will need a bactericide in order to treat the raised veins, Myxazin should help with this.

I would also suggest starting with weekly 25% water changes in order to combat the high levels of waste that a large goldfish will inevitably produce.
(unfortunately a 33% water change only every 3 weeks over a prolonged period may be the cause for these problems)

reddening of the fins is probably septiceamia which is blood poisoning and you need to do 50% water changes from now on daily until it clears up. invest in a test kits...ammonia kit is essential when keeping goldies.

the growth is probably lymphocystis which are rough shaped growths... nothing you can do to get rod of it unless its visually impairing the goldies vision and then only a ver can remove it if at all...most are benign harmless growths.
