So my 7 new Platies are doing well in their cycling tank. All levels across the board look great with my master test kit. I have been doing very small feedings and felt it was time for an algae biscuit to be given. One by one the platies discovered the wafer and of course the red tail white calico platy male was the last to join in. He has been very antisocial in the back upper corner of the tank. After everyone got in on the wafer it seemed that they were all establishing their little community among themselves. My red calico is no longer antisocial or scurries away when I sit to observe my tank and I even seen him get all frenzied and mate with the 'blue wag' platy female that I wanted him to. Most of these fishies I rescued from the LFS where they were floating with closed fins and others I got from a nice small business LFS. The two males have red back ends and the rest are females.

Short 1:40 sec video of my platies sharing a biscuit <3

My platies LOVE Algae wafers!I have to put a few wafers in the tank because the platies just swarm them and my poor other fish cannot get any!

They may need 2 or more wafers.nice colors

Your platies are so big and pretty! Mine are probably half the size of yours
Algae wafers are so expensive :/ I've been trying to feed them real vegetables. I put in a romaine heart lettuce leaf in today :)

If you live in Illinois, you can probably do well by finding fish at 2 different auctions. I attend plenty of auctions held by TCTFS in Peoria. You can find their information here. Another alternative is my own club in Champaign. You can find our club auction information here. Another option that I have yet to try myself is the greenwater club located here. Many of the greenwater people attend both the CAFE and the TCTFS auctions so we impose no restrictions on each other. Each club is wide open to members of the public attending their auctions and sales. In the case of CAFE, my own club, we eevn get a nice discount coupon for a local fish shop that sponsors us. All buyers are given a coupon to use the day of the auction and the fish shop is only a few miles away. We all benefit from the relationship with that local fish shop. They get lots of extra traffic and they provide the club with some nice freebies to raffle off at the club sale.
You will not find any fish with closed fins or other signs of distress at any of these auctions, never.
