I ordered a handful of aquarium plants from ebay to go into my 55L tank.
Its got sand as a substrate.
Pardon my ignorance but am i OK to just plant them in at about 1" depth ?
They are still in their packaging unopened.
Thanks in advance!

Depends what plants you bought?

Some (Anubias, Java Fern etc) can't be buried into the substrate.

Any pictures of them? or do they have any labels? ... or do you know what they are? :fun:

Agree with ^. Will need names or piccies,
When using Live Plants, a substrate of atleast 2" is reccomended.

Dont know the plant names I was promised "a selection from the following.."

Could photograph I guess and show here ?

am i allowed to attach pics in this forum ?

Cos I cant see the option to do so :-(

You need to upload the photos to a hosting site ... Photobucket etc

Then on the screen where you're replying to posts there's a little photo frame icon at the top ^^^^ click it ... then paste the "Direct Link" in that box ...

Voila ... done :good:

just tried that but just got automated message: told not allowed to use that image extension on this board

aargh!!

Hmmm ... no idea what that means :p

Perhaps just post the link from Photobucket directly into the reply here then and then we can look ourselves?

Hope this turns out well...eBay plants are risky unless you know what your looking for.

The only ones I know are Vallis and a Amazon Sword (2nd pic for both) Vallis is the thin strandy ones ... the Sword is the biggest one with nice white roots :good:

The rest ... stem plants ... just put them in the substrate :fun:

I'm sure someone will know the others though :)

For the sword with the nice roots, take scissors and trim a short bit (not more than 2cm) from the tips of the roots. Hold the plant at the top of the roots with your thumb and forefinger and dig a deep hole with the other three fingers (note, this does not refer to our TFF member three-fingers).. spread the roots around as you refill gravel over them and then gently lift the crown (that's the thickest part at the very bottom of the leaves where the roots start) so that it is right at the substrate surface but completely out of the substrate. The roots should be pretty much completely down in the substrate but can show a tiny bit. Swordplants like that can benefit from a "root tab" (I use Flourish root tabs for them) buried deeply, directly under them.
